Observations on "The Celebrity Apprentice"

From watching the first, very fun episode (NBC, 9 tonight)

Rod Blagojevich: The former disgraced Illinois governor adds an interesting element; someone all the celebrities can feel a little superior about. After all, a druggie celebrity is not as bad as a crooked politician. Blagojevich is in it to clear his name (his NBC bio says he was "hijacked" from office) and also to show us he's a good guy. We'll see. Plus his hair trumps Donald's.

Cyndi Lauper: Not a mean bone in her body. A spacey charmer. Love her.

Rosie vs. The Donald: That feud that started when Rosie O'Donnell was on "The View"? Real and not over.

Holly Robinson Peete: Maybe not as intimidating as her husband, former Carolina Panthers QB Rodney, but probably tougher. This is the woman who once knocked down Robin Givens for talking about her mother.

Sinbad: The show's Greek chorus. Look for him to give clarity, even if it isn't needed.

"Drop Dead Diva" is the new "Ugly Betty"

I never thought I'd see the day when Lifetime would become a regular part of my TV rotation. Sure I've checked out the movies on a lazy weekend.

But now with the channel getting 'Project Runway' and after watching "Drop Dead Diva," I think I'm all the way in.

Premiering Sunday at 9 p.m., "Drop Dead Diva" begins with Deb (Brooke D'Orsay) and Jane (Brooke Elliott). Deb is a model, sweet enough to be beloved by a lawyer boyfriend, but so shallow that when she gets to the pearly gates, there is no log of either good deeds or bad deeds. She's declared a 'self-centered' zero.

Tom and Rosie's Sad Little Weekend Movies

Let's start with Tom Selleck.

"Jesse Stone: Thin Ice" (Sunday at 9pm):
If you haven't seen Selleck in the other Jesse Stone movies, here's thebackstory. The character is based on one created by writer Robert B. Parker, who did the "Spenser For Hire" stuff.

Stone is a troubled man, a former LAPD officer who drinks a lot of coffee while he tries not to drink a lot of scotch. He's still getting over getting dumped by his actress wife. He's working as the chief in Paradise, Mass. police force -- there are two other officers.

In this movie, he investigates the shooting of a friend (Stone was sitting in a car next to him) and a kidnapped child. The tone is somber, the humor, martini dry. This is for grown people. Selleck never smiles, and although there's a love interest, there isn't much love. It's a very good movie, realistic rather than rosy.

And speaking of Rosie O'Donnell ...

Even Clay Aiken can't save "Rosie Live"

Rosie O'Donnell's
live variety show last week was predictably over-the-top, but the announcement that NBC would back no other episodes was anything but. When a visitor to Rosie's blog asked Friday when her next special would air, Rosie replied, "there will b no more. no ratings. bad reviews. yet still -- a thrill 4 me."

Raleigh's Clay Aiken appeared on the special, dressed in his Spamalot costume (left). He and Rosie joked about how they both have a child named Parker, and how they are both "Gay...briel Byrne fans." Oddly enough, Clay did not sing on the show.

Ratings for the show were low (about 5 million people watched) and critics didn't love it. Entertainment Weekly called it "surreal" and The New York Times said there was too much attention on celebrity score-settling.

What to Watch on Wednesday: Rosie is live, 'Daisies' is gasping, Housewives are clawing

Rosie Live (8pm, NBC) - Rosie O'Donnell is trying to bring old timey variety shows back. Think Ed Sullivan and Carol Burnett -- comedy skits and musical numbers. And it's live. We're curious.

Pushing Daisies (8pm, ABC) - Just because ABC is run by a bunch of short sighted poopy heads doesn't mean we should stop watching this brilliant little piece of TV heaven. 'Tis better to have watched and lost, than never to have watched at all.

Dirty Sexy Money (10pm, ABC) - Ditto. Only a few of these left, so you might as well watch them. It's a Darling Thanksgiving.

Real Housewives of Atlanta Reunion (10pm, OXYGEN) - These erudite southern belles gather to peacefully and thoughtfully reflect on their past year together -- complete with physical threats, name calling, and (hopefully) wig pulling.
