Explaining the need to cap Forest Pines Drive Elementary

The Wake County school system may be paying again for its decision to pack Forest Pines Drive Elementary and North Forest Pines Elementary on the same campus.

At the recommendation of staff, the school board took the unusual step on Tuesday of implementing an enrollment cap during the middle of a school year. The board's action to put a cap on Forest Pines will allow Growth Management to turn away new students this school year from the school's base and send them to either Wakefield or Rolesville elementary schools.

It's the third time that Forest Pines has been capped since the 2008-09 school year.

New principal named at Rolesville Elementary

The Wake County school board appointed Shejuanna Rodgers on Tuesday to be the new principal of Rolesville Elementary School.

Rodgers, who was Wake's Assistant Principal of the Year in 2008, has been an assistant principal at Apex Middle School since 2004. She previously was a teacher at Rolesville Elementary from 1996 to 2001.

Rodgers will receive a salary of $78,865.

No changes planned for traditional-calendar options

One of the variables for next school year is whether there will be a big increase in the number of year-round and traditional-calendar applicants in Wake County.

As noted in today's article, staff plans to approve all calendar applications filed next month except in those rare cases when a special education requirement would be an issue. While the percentage of approvals will go up, Asst. Supt. Chuck Dulaney said they're not expecting much of an increase in total applicants.

In the case of traditional-calendar applicants, the reason why they might not increase much could be a source of anger for some parents.

Lillian Lee files for Wake school board vacancy

Retired educator Lillian Lee has got some pretty prominent backing in her bid to fill the vacancy on the school board.

Lee, who submitted her application Monday, included reference letters from former Superintendent Bob Bridges and former principal Johnny Farmer. This could give Lee's application some weight as the board weighs who will fill Rosa Gill's District 4 seat in Southeast Raleigh.

"Mrs. Lee appears to be a clear thinker and is confident in her abilities," Bridges wrote in his reference letter. "I believe that the current state of affairs in her life will permit the commitment of time and energy required to serve on the school board."
