What to Watch on Sunday: 'Luck' ends and 'Mad Men' begins

NCAA Basketball (CBS) - Kentucky plays Baylor at 2 p.m. and UNC takes on Kansas at 4:30.

Once Upon A Time (8pm, ABC) - The Who's Roger Daltrey stars as the voice of the Caterpillar in tonight's "Alice in Wonderland"-themed episode. In the episode, Emma is kidnapped by a mentally unstable man with a hat obsession.

Luck (9pm, HBO) - Tonight's series finale also serves as a season finale, since HBO abruptly stopped production on the second season last week after a third horse died on the "Luck" set. In the finale, Gus (Dennis Farina) draws on past experience to deal with a present threat, and Ace (Dustin Hoffman) is floored by a surprise visitor. John Ortiz, at left, plays trainer Turo Escalante.

Mad Men (9pm, AMC) - In tonight's two-hour Season 5 premiere, Roger and Pete clash, and Joan has a run-in with a houseguest. Here's everything I can -- and can't -- tell you about tonight's premiere and a cool gallery of Season 5 photos.

The Good Wife (9pm, CBS) - Alicia is assigned to be on a blue-ribbon panel that is investigating a police shooting, but she soon begins to question the actions of the panel chairman.

Celebrity Apprentice (9pm, NBC) - The celebrities must hose a launch party for a "mocktail" drink product. We think Clay Aiken may be the project leader tonight.

Shameless (9pm, Showtime) - Fiona's Thanksgiving plans get put on the back burner when Frank tries to get Monica out of bed to help with her depression.

Eastbound & Down (10pm, HBO) - Kenny tries a new pitch while attempting to be a better man and more responsible father.

Daltrey coming back with Clapton

Well, we have ticket prices for the March 8 Eric Clapton show, and they're about average by today's lofty standards -- $45, $65 and $85. But what's most notable is that the RBC Center link for the show reveals a nice detail, the identity of the opening act:

The tour will stop in Raleigh, NC on March 8 at the RBC Center and will feature very special guest, Roger Daltrey to kick off the show.

Daltrey, you might recall, played in Durham back in October, and it was pretty danged swell.

Roger Daltrey: Goin' mobile

On the one hand, it must frustrate Roger Daltrey to go around doing solo tours like the one that played Durham Wednesday night. Whenever he'd fire up a Who song, everybody in the crowd would jump up, rock out and cheer wildly. And then whenever he did one of his solo songs or a cover, everybody would sit right back down. It was yet another example of the dilemma that singers from legendary bands face when they go solo.

Still, being the pragmatic sort, Daltrey probably didn't mind too much. He was singing, people were listening and all was right with the world. By the end of the set, his shirt was open and he was swinging the microphone around just like old times. That moment at the beginning of "Baba O'Riley" when the drums kick off and lock in with the synthesizer squiggle and the anthemic piano riff, just as Daltrey made like a lasso with his microphone -- it just doesn't get any better than that.

For me, the high point actually came from one of Daltrey's sidemen. That was Simon Townshend, Pete's younger brother and longtime guitarist in Daltrey's solo band, who took a star turn as vocalist on the manic ode to being in motion, "Goin' Mobile." Nailed it just perfectly, too.

Roger Daltrey: Who are you?

In my line of work, one constantly hears a great deal of high-falutin' yammering about artistic integrity, What It All Means and so forth -- much of which, quite frankly, is ridiculous. So it was truly refreshing to chat with Roger Daltrey, a man who has most decidedly been to the mountaintop and yet seems to harbor no illusions whatsoever about the cosmic meaning of it all. The interview is in Friday's paper, or right here; and it has where/when details about his Durham performance next week.

Coming our way: Roger Daltrey

Well, it's not The Who (and it's not even the next best thing to The Who, for that matter) but it's still pretty cool in my book: Roger Daltrey will play the Durham Performing Arts Center on Oct. 28 as part of his first solo tour since 1985. Tickets go on sale Friday at 10 a.m.
