Wolfpack headed to College World Series after 17-inning classic

RALEIGH It took 17 innings, and more than 7 hours, but N.C. State is going to the College World Series.

Senior center fielder Brett Williams drove in Tarran Senay in the 17th inning to lift N.C. State to a 5-4 win over Rice and clinch a spot in Omaha, Neb. for the Wolfpack for the first time since 1968.

N.C. State (49-14) needed another ninth-inning rally and nine pitchers, but it out-lasted the Owls in a classic college baseball game.

Fincher's hit gives Pack dramatic 4-3 win

RALEIGH Wayne Graham, with almost 1,000 wins at Rice, knows what a win looks like.

With a one-run lead in the ninth, and his best relief pitcher on the mound, the Owls coach thought Saturday's Super Regional game at N.C. State looked like another winner.

"We had the game," the veteran Rice coach said.

Rice had it right up until N.C. State walked off with it. Jake Fincher's clutch single and Brett Williams' hustle gave the Wolfpack a 4-3 win over Rice and moved N.C. State to within one win of the College World Series.

Beginner cooking lessons: omelet, roast chicken, vinaigrette

If you got a chance to read my column today, you know it offers readers' advice on what every beginner cook should know. I promised to share a few recipes.

The one I really want to share with you is my go-to roast chicken recipe: Ina Garten's Lemon Chicken with Croutons. This is from her "Barefoot Contessa in Paris" cookbook. While indulgent, the croutons make this dish so don't skip them.

Go HERE to see that recipe.

Here's Emeril's simple balsamic vinaigrette recipe

And here is a recipe I found on a blog for a cheater omelet.

And I'll like use Mark Bittman's money-saving marinara sauce HERE.

ECU 49, Rice 13

GREENVILLE -- Rice was the perfect Homecoming guest for East Carolina. For one October afternoon, the hapless Owls made the Pirates look like kings.

Senior receiver Dwayne Harris scored three touchdowns, including a 92-yard kickoff return, to lead ECU to an easy 49-13 win over the winless Owls at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium on Saturday.

Chicken and Rice...Only one dish needed

There are certain dishes that I never grow tired of and chicken and rice is one of them.

Pirates host No. 3 Rice in crucial C-USA series

East Carolina's 15th-ranked baseball team will face No. 3 Rice this weekend at Clark-LeClair Stadium in a battle of the top two teams in Conference USA.

The Pirates (25-7, 8-1 C-USA) are in first place and the visiting Owls (23-7, 7-2) are in second.
