What to Watch on Wednesday: "American Idol" and "Hot in Cleveland" return

American Idol (8pm, Fox) - The new season opens tonight with auditions and a new slate of judges. Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler join Randy Jackson, and Jimmy Iovine is the new in-house mentor. Producers promise the whole show will be re-vamped. We'll soon see if America wants an "Idol" without Simon Cowell...

Modern Family (9pm, ABC) - The Dunphy kids get an unpleasant surprise when they deliver breakfast in bed for Phil and Claire's anniversary, and an email may spoil a trip to Las Vegas for Jay and Gloria.

Blue Bloods (10pm, CBS) - Tonight, Danny and Jackie investigate the murder of a high-price escort after the victim's body is found in a river. Meanwhile, Frank reopens a cold case from 25 years ago when a missing boy's remains are found. This is a new night for "Blue Bloods."

LA: City of Demons (10pm, Investigation Discovery) - Author James Ellroy discusses a the rape and murder of two teenage girls in the opener of this new series examining crimes in Los Angeles.

Hot in Cleveland (10pm, TV Land) - In the second season premiere, Elka (Betty White) is behind bars with an ornery cellmate (Mary Tyler Moore) while her friends try to put together enough money to bail her out. Their efforts are complicated by Victoria's financial crisis and Joy's trouble with the INS. Read more about the Betty White - Mary Tyler Moore reunion.

Retired at 35 (10:30pm, TV Land) - In the premiere of this new comedy, a successful New York executive quits his job and moves in with his parents (George Segal, Jessica Walter) in a Florida retirement community. It's really not very good.

"Retired at 35" is just too tired

TV Land's new sitcom, "Retired at 35," might be the worst thing I've seen in quite awhile -- but that doesn't mean it can't be successful.

TV Land needed something (apparently, anything) to swoop in at 10:30 and capture some of that "Hot in Cleveland" audience. I get that. But surely the network could have done better than this.

"Retired at 35" is about a young guy (Johnathan McClain, who looks much younger than 35, I must say) who is successful in his New York job but rashly quits that job and moves in with his parents at their retirement village in Florida. George Segal and Jessica Walter are the parents.
