Wake County releases more details on Tuesday's events with superintendent finalists

We've got some more details about what will happen Tuesday with the events being held for the Wake County superintendent finalists.

The district will not be charged for renting Memorial Auditorium for Tuesday night's community forum, according to Renee McCoy, a Wake schools' spokeswoman. McCoy said Wake is grateful for Memorial Auditorium's generosity in allowing them to be able to hold the forum at such a large venue.

"It provides a much larger venue for more citizens to participate," said McCoy, who will be the moderator at the forum.

Questioning the punishments for the Enloe High School water-balloon prank

Is an out-of-school suspension for five days and being arrested by police for disorderly conduct or assault charges the proper punishment for last week's water balloon prank at Enloe High School?

The Coalition of Concerned Citizens for African American Children is questioning the response by the school district and Raleigh police. But as noted in today's column by Barry Saunders, Wake school officials say suspensions were issued not for throwing balloons but disobeying the rules.

“Some students — let’s be specific, a small percentage of them — simply were not following the rules," said Wake schools spokeswoman Renee McCoy in the column. "They had been warned the day before by the principal on the intercom” that no disruptive pranks would be tolerated.

UPDATE

See update at end of post in which Calla Wright sent a new message Tuesday, copied to the media, requesting a meeting with Wake County school leaders to discuss the Enloe suspensions and arrests.

Wake County school video touts construction experience

The Wake County school system's PR campaign to retain control over school construction, maintenance and ownership is underway.

The video highlights the arguments that the district and its supporters have made about the experience Wake has in school construction that the county doesn't possess. The video says 42 new schools and 62 major renovations have been done since 2001 in "a process which requires careful planning, thoughtful oversight and responsible fiscal management."

The video notes how schools are designed with educational specifications in mind and that the district has won nearly 50 school construction awards since 1991.

Mike Charbonneau latest person to leave Wake County schools to work at DOT

The revolving door from the Wake County school system to the state Department of Transportation continues.

Mike Charbonneau, currently Wake's director of public affairs, will be leaving to become director of communications at DOT. The school system has hired Renee McCoy, a former WRAL news anchor and more recently chief spokeswoman for the state Department of Health and Human Resources, to replace Charbonneau.

Charbonneau is one of a growing number of Wake school employees who are rejoining Tony Tata, the former Wake superintendent and now state Transportation Secretary.

UPDATE

Ann Dishong is interim director of the DOT governance office. This makes at least five former Wake school employees who've joined Tata at DOT.
