New principal named to Reedy Creek Middle School

The Wake County school board announced one principal appointment tonight and filled a new central office position.

Hilton Trent Evans will become principal of Reedy Creek Middle School in Cary with a salary of $93,422. He has been principal of Reedy Creek Elementary since 2007.

Ruth Steidinger was appointed to the new position of senior director of academic programming and support. She's currently senior director of middle school programs.

Information wasn't immediately available about the new position, which board member Jim Martin cited for him voting no.

School board questioning sample feeder patterns

Could the development of feeder patterns be more of a hold-up on the new Wake County student assignment plan than coming to an agreement on achievement-choice schools?

As noted in today's article, staff's update on the student assignment plan included discussion on achievement schools and a presentation on sample feeder patterns. During the meeting, board members said zilch on the achievement schools but went into detail on the feeder patterns.

"We know this is contentious," Superintendent Tony Tata said to board members in response to the feeder pattern concerns. "This is high stakes. We want your feedback to make this right."

Board adds nodes for consideration in 2011-12 reassignment plan

The Wake County school board expanded the potential scope of the 2011-12 student reassignment plan but still have a lot more to discuss.

As noted in today's article, the board agreed to add for consideration a number of moves not recommended for staff for next year. These are among a list of deferred moves that were brought up in the spring.

That includes the Middle Creek to Garner High moves advocated by board member John Tedesco. Board members took the approach that they'd rather send notice to parents they're considering the moves so as to get input over the next month.

UPDATE

Wake will send notices to parents if they're in the nodes added for consideration on Tuesday. But if you want to check now, click here to find out your node number to see if you're affected.

Three principals appointed

Another Wake school with a H1N1 case

School officials have confirmed that a student at Laurel Park Elementary School in Apex has been diagnosed with the H1N1 virus.

A note was sent home today to Laurel Park families. The school will be disinfected tonight and is set to open as normal on Friday.

This comes after it was confirmed Wednesday that a student from Reedy Creek Middle School in Cary had contracted the virus.

H1N1 found in Wake school

H1N1 has finally hit a school in Wake County.

School officials are reporting that there is a confirmed case of H1N1 in a student at Reedy Creek Middle School in Cary. School officials say the student is recovering at home and that crews will sanitize the school this evening.

Dr. Elizabeth Tilson, Wake County's interim health director, spoke to the school board on Tuesday about what would happen if H1N1 was found at a school.

Tilson said the school would not be automatically closed. Instead, she said it would be handled on a case by case basis.
