Former Methodist University and local high school assistant Jon Sherman will be the next head football coach of East Chapel Hill's Wildcats.
Sherman was confirmed for the post at East Chapel Hill by the school board Thursday night, said East Chapel Hill Athletics Director Ray Hartsfield.
Last year, Sherman served as an assistant under East Chapel Hill head coach Bill Renner. When Renner announced he was stepping down at the end of the season, Sherman took over most of the day-to-day operations for the Wildcat football program as the search for a full-time replacement advanced.
Sherman, a native of Naples, Fla., played four seasons in the Methodist football program, splitting time at wide receiver and tight end. He helped the Monarchs win the 2005 USA South Athletic Conference championship his senior year.
He was a four-time Academic All-Conference selection and was named a Methodist Senior Scholar Athlete.
A December 2005 graduate of Methodist with a bachelor's degree in political science and a minor in pre-law, Sherman was the wide receivers coach for two seasons at Fayetteville Jack Britt High School and helped the Buccaneers to two conference championships and an appearance to the 2008 NCHSAA state championship game.
Sherman joined the Methodist football staff in July 2009, serving as the wide receivers coach.
