This is Stephen Gainey's last official day on the job in the Wake County school system, but will it be his last day ever?
Gainey, who was Wake's acting and later interim superintendent for nine months, starts his new job Monday as Randolph County superintendent. At 42, Gainey might return one day for the permanent superintendent's position.
"I know how much you love this place and Wake County, and we'll look for you to be back at some point," said school board chairman Keith Sutton to Gainey at last week's board meeting.
It may depend on how long Jim Merrill stays on as the new superintendent.
