With a public memorial service for Michael Jackson set for Tuesday in Los Angeles, the accompanying remembrance service in Raleigh is back on.
"Yes, we are going forward with it," says co-organizer Bruce Lightner. Originally, Jackson's funeral was going to happen today at his Neverland complex in California. But that was canceled after county officials declined to issue the necessary permits. So local organizers also canceled the Raleigh event, which had been set for 2 p.m. today at Time Warner Cable Music Pavilion at Walnut Creek.
Now the local program is happening at the Raleigh Convention Center, starting at noon Tuesday with an hour of performances by the Martin Luther King All-Children's Choir and other groups. A video feed of the funeral services at Los Angeles' Staples Center will take center stage at 1 p.m., simulcast on video screens in the convention center.
Admission is $5 to cover expenses. Tickets go on sale at 9 a.m. Monday at the Raleigh Convention Center box office, and also at the Progress Energy Center box office.
A daylong conference, "Taking Control of Your Diabetes," will be held Saturday, May 2, at the Raleigh Convention Center downtown.
The conference, featuring speakers, physical activity workshops and health exhibits, is open to the public and costs $25.
Among those presenting are Dr. John Buse, who leads the diabetes clinic at UNC Health Care. Buse is also past president of the American Diabetes Association.
The conference is sponsored by the Taking Care of Your Diabetes organization. For more information and to register, go to: http://www.tcoyd.org/conferences/conf_05.02.09.php
The Durham Performing Arts Center isn't the only under-construction building announcing concerts today. The new Raleigh Convention Center is set to open with "Raleigh Wide Open," a three-stage event featuring some three-dozen acts playing free shows around downtown the weekend of Sept. 5-6. And the most intriguing booking is the great and venerable Chuck Berry, in his first performance around these parts in eons (near as I can tell, he's not played here in the 17 years I've lived in Raleigh). We'll see if the man can still duckwalk at age 81.
The other headliners include hometown buzz band Annuals; a couple of Raleigh Downtown Live alumni, '90s-vintage hitmakers Soul Asylum and Arrested Development; and '70s rock dude Lou Gramm. Bunches more support acts should be announced soon.
ADDENDUM: Unrelated to "RWO," but another cool upcoming downtown event: Magnetic fields at Meymandi Hall Oct. 18.
