Emptying the notebook on Leesville Road brothers Austin and Braxton Berrios

Here are some other notes on the Berrios brothers that didn’t appear in the paper:

Braxton Berrios said he was excited that his older brother was going to return the opening kickoff for Senior Night – and not him. But Braxton also knew WF-R noticed the switch.

On the kickoff, the Cougars kicked the ball directly to Austin. Though Braxton said the Cougars were not intending on hurting Austin, he felt their move was smart and calculated.

“We expected a much closer game and you can’t hold anything back on a team like that,” Braxton said of Austin retuning the kick. “I understand what Wake Forest-Rolesville did trying to kick the ball to him.”

And as expected on its next kickoff, WF-R kicked the ball to Braxton.

“Once they kicked it to him, and that happen, I saw the ball come to me next,” Braxton said. “I said, ‘Let’s get down and ready for the next play.’ ”

The move was critical for Leesville Road as Braxton ran out of bounds after getting a couple yards. Braxton finished the game with 245 rushing yards and three touchdowns.

A mother’s request

Lee Berrios, the mother Austin and Braxton, has told her sons to help each other during their situation.

When Braxton is on the field leading the offense, Lee Berrios wants Austin to help his brother with what he sees on the sidelines. She hopes Austin gives Braxton advice on offensive line protection and the opponent’s coverage schemes.

When Austin comes off the field, she wants Braxton to listen to his older brother and make him feel part of the team.

Leesville Road to have varsity lacrosse programs

Leesville Road, a school that won state championships in boys golf and girls soccer a few months ago, has added lacrosse as a varsity spring sport.

Jack Rogers, Leesville Road’s athletic director, has seen the recent impact lacrosse has had on other schools in the area, especially in the Cap Eight 4-A conference. Rogers said he and Principal Scott Lyons made the decision a few weeks ago to offer the sport next year.

“I think it’s exciting for not only our students, but for everybody,” said Rogers, who expects the lacrosse programs to add points to the schools’ Wachovia Cup standings next year. “It’s exciting for us as an athletic department to add a new sport. I think we’ll be competitive.”

Leesville Road beats Ardrey Kell for 4-A title

CARY -- This season was always about pushing forward for Leesville Road’s girls soccer team. The Pride did it again and again. The season-ending injuries to Kelsey Reeves and Kelsey Weiss. Coach Paul Dinkenor playing inexperienced freshman Zaria Maynard in goal. Even the tough, demanding victories in overtime of these playoffs.

The Pride just kept pushing.

By playing with poise and structure in the midfield, the Pride pushed past previously unbeate Charlotte Ardrey Kell – for the third time in four years – to take a 3-0 victory for the NCHSAA 4-A state title.

Pride escape Caps in overtime

RALEIGH -- In the third minute of overtime, Leesville Road forward Kelsey Weiss put in an easy rebound past Broughton goalkeeper Caroline Duncan for the match-winning goal in a 2-1 victory.

The initial shot came from Caroline Gentry, who attracted two Broughton defenders her way. That created enough space for Weiss, who was in front of the net, to score uncontested.

“[Weiss] was in the right place at the right time,” coach Paul Dinkenor said. “Caroline did a lot of approach work [for the goal], and Weiss got the rebound and knocked it in.”

Running around and screaming was the only reaction for the Middle Creek Mustangs. A hero didn’t need to be identified amid their celebration. For coach Sean Crocker, he didn’t need to know who made the game-winning tackle. All that mattered to him was what the final score Friday night in the first round of the 4-AA playoffs.

WAKE FOREST -- Wake Forest-Rolesville’s best player on Friday night made sure to take in the moment. Amid all the cheers and joy that surrounded him, Marcus Jones stayed quiet.

On one knee, Jones watched everyone – his teammates, the students, and the entire coaching staff – rejoice over his best play of the game: A five-yard touchdown run in overtime that gave the Cougars a 20-14 win over second-ranked Leesville Road.

RALEIGH - The coach waited patiently to surprise one of his youngest players. Leesville Road coach David Green was so happy for Braxton Berrios, a freshman playing alongside his older brother Austin, a junior.

As the two brothers talked to each other after the Pride’s 32-7 win over Millbrook on Friday night, Green snuck behind Braxton.

Game over: Leesville Road 36, Broughton 28

The Pride did enough in the fourth quarter to control the ball, and the clock, by running the ball for first downs. The defense also intercepted Caps quarterback Will Cooper in the end zone to end any threat from Broughton.

Wake Forest-Rolesville sweeps Leesville Road

Wake Forest-Rolesville outside hitter Karson Ratliff didn’t waste any time setting the tone for the final set of a 25-22, 25-20, 25-14 win over Leesville Road on Tuesday night.

After struggling through the first two sets against the Pride, Ratliff came alive in the third. With her team leading 5-1, Ratliff took an Elizabeth James set, spiked it off the ground and back up into the air 12 feet.

Ratliff’s thunderous spike was just the start of a dominant final set for one of the area’s top players. Ratliff, a senior, registered 10 of her 15 kills in the third as the Cougars swept Leesville Road.
