RALEIGH — The Carolina Hurricanes toppled Martin Brodeur and the New Jersey Devils in the first round and the Boston Bruins, the best team in the Eastern Conference, in the second round.

The Pittsburgh Penguins turned out to be too much. The Canes' unlikely postseason run ended Tuesday night with a 4-1 loss on their home ice.

The Penguins, the Stanley Cup runner-up in 2008, will get another shot at the NHL's top prize after sweeping the Canes in the Eastern Conference Finals.

No easy way out for Canes

A clip from "Rocky Balboa" played on the jumbotron during the second period of Game 3.

Cardinal rule of jumbotron management: Never motivate with a Rocky movie made after 1985.

For tonight's Game 4, the CanesVision crew should consider the more appropriate "Rocky IV," aka the movie that single-handedly toppled the Soviet Union (perhaps it will have the same effect on Evgeni Malkin).

RALEIGH — You can see the end from here.

Evgeni Malkin has the Pittsburgh Penguins poised to play for the Stanley Cup and almost single-handedly has finished off the Carolina Hurricanes' inspiring playoff run.

Malkin's two goals and assist led the Penguins to a 6-2 rout of the Canes in Game 3 and a 3-0 series stranglehold.

Penguins have been in Canes' shoes

RALEIGH — The Pittsburgh Penguins know what it feels like to be down 2-0 in a Stanley Cup Playoffs series.

In the last round, the Washington Capitals took a 2-0 lead to start the series. The Penguins proceeded to go on a 3-0 tear before trading blows to win the series in Game 7 in Washington.

Pittsburgh defenseman Brooks Orpik said the team never lost its confidence.

“With all due respect to the way Washington played, we kind of had the feeling that we had kind of beaten ourselves with the mistakes that we made,” said Orpik. “It wasn’t like they were doing stuff that we weren’t prepared for. … It was just mistakes that we were making. It wasn’t plays that they were making."

Defense must be better

RALEIGH — Shutting down Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin is no easy task, but it will need to be done if the Hurricanes are to advance to the Stanley Cup Finals.

Malkin’s top-shelf, no-look backhander capped his hat trick in Thursday’s 7-4 win at Mellon Arena.

Malkin has 4 goals, and 2 assists against the Hurricanes in two games this series. Crosby has one goal and two assists in that period. Two of Malkin’s goals broke the Hurricanes’ backs in the third period.
