The fifth annual Kick It for Cancer boys soccer showcase is scheduled for Saturday at CASL's WRAL soccer complex in Raleigh. The event is expected to involve 22 teams.

PITTSBORO — With his team up 28-17 with more than eight minutes left in the conference championship-deciding game, Northwood’s Austin Matthews burst through the line, confronted punter Brandon Phares and gobbled up the punt to take it down to the 6-yard-line.

The block set up Northwood’s third fourth-quarter touchdown and distanced the Chargers (7-4, 4-0) from their Carolina-10 opponents, eventually winning the game and the conference title with the 41-17 victory.

When East Chapel Hill and Northwood took the field Friday night for their first respective games of the season, a healthy dose of penalties was to be expected.

A win for East was not.
