Canes 4, Coyotes 3 (OT)

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- The Carolina Hurricanes are coming off the road. Finally.

Time to unpack the suitcases after 11 days away. No more series of late-night flights and bus rides. No more hotel food.

The Canes ended a grinding five-game road trip Saturday, edging the Phoenix Coyotes 4-3 on Anton Babchuk's goal with 2:08 left in overtime at Jobing.com Arena. That made for a more pleasant trip home, where the Hurricanes will make their first home appearance of the season Wednesday against the Washington Capitals at the RBC Center.

Canes sign Coyotes wing Goertzen

The Hurricanes have signed former Phoenix Coyotes right wing Steven Goertzen to a one-year, two-way contract.

The deal pays the 25-year-old Goertzen $500,000 at the NHL level and $100,000 should he land with the Canes' American Hockey League affiliate next season.

Goertzen played 16 games with the Coyotes last season, scoring two goals and recording two assists. Playing the rest of the season with the Coyotes' AHL affiliate, the 6-foot-2, 216-pound wing scored six goals and earned eight assists, totaling 90 penalty minutes in 57 AHL games.

Hurricanes 7, Coyotes 2

The Carolina Hurricanes struck early and often and dominated the Phoenix Coyotes 7-2, handing the hosts their sixth straight loss.

At Jobing.com Arena in Glendale, Ariz., the Hurricanes scored four power play goals and a short-handed goal to atone for the only penalty they didn’t kill, a four-minute double minor in the second period.

RALEIGH — Henry and Linda Staal have three sons in the NHL, so they can’t make it to all of Eric’s games. The Carolina Hurricanes might want to ask them anyway.

With his parents at the RBC Center, Eric Staal broke out of an eight-game slump with a hat trick in the Canes’ 5-2 win over the Phoenix Coyotes on Friday night. It was the Canes third straight win and fourth in six home games.

"It was Eric Staal's night," Canes goalie Cam Ward said.
