Wake County school board announces new principals at five schools

The Wake County school board announced principals Tuesday for five schools.

Robert James was promoted from assistant principal to principal of East Wake School of Arts, Education and Global Studies in Wendell. James, who has been at East Wake since 2010, will now receive a salary of $70,812.

Eric Fitts was promoted from assistant principal to principal of Brentwood Elementary School in northeast Raleigh, Fitts, who has been at Brentwood since 2011, will now receive a salary of $80,814.

Wake County's 2012 Principal of the Year retiring

Ken Branch is retiring as principal of Brentwood Elementary School in North Ralegh just a few months after being named the Wake County School System's 2012 Principal of the Year.

Tonight, the school board appointed Teresa Abron, a retired principal, to be Brentwood's interim principal starting Dec. 3 and running through May 31. Board members said they were surprised by Branch's retirement.

Judge rules Wake can't suspend student for fight at bus stop

Should a Wake County student who gets into a fight at a school bus stop be subject to a long-term suspension?

As noted in today's article, Superior Court Judge Carl Fox ruled Monday that Wake did not have jurisdiction to issue a long-term suspension to a Millbrook High student who punched a student at a bus stop in September 2009.

Wake had insisted it could suspend students for behavior that takes place off campus, even when it's not part of a school-sponsored trip or activity.

A.M.E. Zion Church to announce initiative to help Wake's black male students

The leadership of the Eastern N.C. Episcopal Diocese of the A.M.E. Zion Church says it will announce tonight "the launching of a special Wake County School Initiative for Economically –Disadvantaged Students with a targeted focus on reaching the Black Male."

The announcement will come during an 8:30 p.m. news conference at Rush Metropolitan A.M.E. Zion Church, 558 East Cabarrus St. in Raleigh.

In addition, organizers say the event is meant to show they're "renewing their commitment to fight the abandonment of the socio-economic diversity policy which will lead to high poverty, racially identifiable public schools in Wake County."

Changing bell schedules for Enloe and six other schools

Enloe High School isn’t the only one whose bell schedule got tweaked today.

While Enloe's schedule was changed again to add 10 more minutes each day for the upcoming school year, six other schools needed changes as well.

Chief Academic Officer Donna Hargens said the districtwide bell schedule list the school board approved on March 31 had some errors and left out at least one school.
