RALEIGH — The Flyers' Jeff Carter scored the winner off of a faceoff with 1:26 left in overtime for a 2-1 win Saturday at RBC Center. From the right circle, Carter fired the unassisted goal.
The puck had bounced over Hurricanes goalie Michael Leighton's right and found the net.
With called-up defensemen Tim Conboy and Casey Borer set to join the line-up tonight in their season debut, Hurricanes coach Paul Maurice praised what both players accomplished with the AHL's Albany River Rats this year, and spoke about the physical game Conboy brings.
"Timmy obviously brings a physical component, and that's part of what he offers our team," said Maurice. "We want to see that from him tonight, but we also want to see him control it. ... I don't need to see him try to impress the new coach three minutes into the game, if it's not the right time."
RALEIGH -- The Philadelphia Flyers are still rolling. As for the Carolina Hurricanes ...
Even a blistering, closed-door locker-room talk from Canes coach Peter Laviolette during the first intermission couldn't prevent a third straight loss as the Flyers won 3-1 Wednesday at the RBC Center for their sixth straight victory.

RALEIGH — The Canes, with center Eric Staal in the lineup for his first preseason game, finally have a preseason victory.
The Hurricanes got a goal from Sergei Samsonov midway the first period and goalie Michael Leighton made it stand up against the Flyers.
The biggest concern for the Canes: center Matt Cullen leaving the game for precautionary reasons after a collision in the first period, and defenseman Josef Melichar being helped to the locker room after taking a puck in the face in the third.
