NCCU's cafeteria finally reopens

After two years and $13 million in renovations, N.C. Central University's campus dining hall has reopened.

The new W.G. Pearson Cafeteria seats more than 1,200 and includes features like plasma televisions and a cyber-cafe.

It houses a convenience store and the university's ticket office.

It was a long time coming. Even the temporary cafeteria NCCU used during construction was saddled with delays and cost overruns.

The university will hold a brief ceremony Tuesday at 1 p.m. welcoming the cafeteria back to campus.

It is located on Lawson Street.

NCCU's Pearson Cafeteria nearly complete

Renovations to N.C. Central University's Pearson Cafeteria are nearly complete.

According to a NCCU memo, the $13 million project is more than 90 percent complete with just final touches like kitchen equipment installation still to go.

The project is expected to conclude this month. The work was originally slated to be done by last year, but delays pushed it back and created some financial headaches for the university in providing a temporary cafeteria for students.

The existing Pearson cafeteria has been expanded by 34,000 square feet with seating expanded to 1,750. There's a new faculty and staff dining room and an upgraded kitchen and serving line as well, according to the university memo.

An NCCU official will brief trustees on this and other projects today.
