Cooking Channel star Bobby Deen to sign books in Cary

Mark your calendar: Bobby Deen, star of "Not My Mama's Meals" on the Cooking Channel, will be signing copies of his latest cookbook at 7 p.m. Feb. 12 at the Barnes & Noble store in Cary.

Deen, whose latest book is "From Mama's Table to Mine," takes his mother's indulgent dishes into healthier fare. His mother, Paula Deen, is a Savannah restaurateur, Food Network star and cookbook author who revealed last year that she has diabetes.

The bookstore is located 760 SE Maynard Road, Cary.

What to Watch on Friday: Paula Deen closes out 'Who Do You Think You Are?'

Who Do You Think You Are? (8pm, NBC) - Paula Deen visits her aunt in Georgia, who provides her with information that takes her back 150 years in her family’s history. As she digs deeper into her heritage she uncovers her ancestor’s political ties and his connection to a dark time in America’s history. Further exploration reveals a heartbreaking event that deeply impacted her ancestors during the Civil War. Unfortunately, this is the final episode of "Who Do You Think You Are," because NBC declined to renew for next season. Sadness.

Shark Tank (8pm, ABC) - The Season 3 finale includes an update on a site that sells VIP treatment at nightclubs and special events.

Nikita (8pm, CW) - The second season ends with Nikita and Michael invading Division to capture Percy.

Grimm (9pm, NBC) - The search for mysterious gold coins intensifies as the body count rises in Portland, and the arrival of a woman in black complicates matters for Nick and Hank in the Season 1 finale.

Supernatural (9pm, CW) - Season 7 concludes with Sam and Dean battling Leviathan Dick Roman and trying to stop him from carrying out his evil plans.

What to Watch on Friday: Liza Minnelli cooks with Paula Deen

Chuck (8pm, NBC) - Sarah goes solo on a mission to face up to a haunting secret from her past. She encounters her original handler (Tim DeKay, "White Collar") and fears he might harm those she loves, including her mother (Cheryl Ladd).

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (8pm, ABC) - The 2005 version of C.S. Lewis' novels about four British children who enter a magical world where they befriend creatures and battle a witch.

Paula's Best Dishes (9pm, Food) - Kathy Griffin stops by for ladies' night at Paula Deen's. They make mac-and-cheese and chocolate-espresso cupcakes. On a second episode at 9:30, Paula is joined by Liza Minnelli. They make German chocolate cake, creamy lobster toast rounds, and New York strip steaks. Word on the street is that Liza holds a live chicken.

Gold Rush Aftershow Special (9pm, Discovery) - Interviews with the cast and behind-the-scenes footage from the current season of "Gold Rush: Alaska."

Sanctuary (10pm, Syfy) - In the Season 4 finale, Henry and Tesla learn that the SCIU weaponized Tesla's work to use against Abnormals. Also, Bigfoot and Kate investigate Caleb's rise to power while Will and Abby look into Magnus' past.

  • You must buy a copy of the book at the bookstore to get a signing line ticket.
  • Deen will not be signing any of her other books.
  • You cannot reserve books to be signed if you cannot be present at the book signing.
  • The signing will only last two hours or she will only sign 600 books, whichever comes first.
  • She will not personalize her signing of the book, sign any memorabilia or pose for photos. (There will be a designated photo area to pause briefly to take a photo.)

Dr. Oz proclaims Raleigh woman "Unhealthiest Cook in America"

Vita Griffin of Raleigh didn't set out to be the Unhealthiest Cook in America, but when that dubious honor fell into her lap last month, she accepted it with a sense of humor and a resolve to change her ways.

The Raleigh mother of three was nominated when producers for the "Dr. Oz Show" starting looking for unhealthy cooks in January. Griffin, who still isn't sure who snitched on her, got a call from producers who started quizzing her about what kinds of foods she cooked and how she cooked them.

Before she knew it, the producers told her they wanted to send a film crew to her home, along with a plane ticket so that she could appear with Dr. Mehmet Oz on his show in New York.

What to Watch on Saturday: Rose Parade, bowl games, repeats

Tournament of Roses Parade (11am, ABC, NBC, Hallmark, HGTV) - Paula Deen is the grand marshal for the 122nd parade through Pasadena, California. Not sure if Deen will be hawking hams the whole time, but y'all know she might. Reason to watch: NCCU marching band is part of the action. And then, of course, there's a bunch of football today (and over the next few days).

V (8pm, ABC) - Tonight's three back-to-back repeats are a decent catch-up for those tuning in to next week's Season 2 premiere. At 8pm you can watch the pilot, at 9pm there's an episode about the Visitors ferreting out the Fifth Column, and then the Season 1 finale airs at 10pm. The second season debuts Tuesday, January 4 at 9pm.

Hot in Cleveland (8pm, TV Land) - There's a marathon from 8pm to midnight. The final installment is their "behind the scenes" special and a glimpse of Season 2, which debuts January 19.

Austin City Limits (Midnight, UNC-TV) - Cheap Trick performs material from their 2009 album, "The Latest," as well as some of their classics.

Gooey Butter Cake is a summer indulgence

One of the best things about my family's annual return to St. Louis, my hometown, is the food. In between family visits and trips to the pool, I consume as many of my childhood favorites as I possibly can.

In honor of my annual Midwestern overindulgence, I share a favorite treat -- Gooey Butter Cake. The dessert is so rich, buttery and gooey, I usually make it only for picnics or church suppers.

Although Gooey Butter Cake has been a St. Louis favorite since the 1930s, I recently found the same recipe from Paula Deen. There must be a Midwestern connection.

Paula Deen cancels Durham shows

Food Network star Paula Deen has canceled six shows in her Celebrity Chefs Tour, including two shows scheduled for today at Durham's Performing Arts Center.

Apparently there's some dispute regarding the blame for the cancellation of "An Evening with Paula Deen and Family." Deen's camp attributes the cancellation to a payment problem with the show's promoter, but the promoter released a statement insisting Deen has been paid.
