Valentine's Day food truck rodeo in Carrboro

A handful of food trucks will gather for the Valentine's Day Food Rodeo and Fundraiser from 5:30-9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 14 at the Carrboro Farmers' Market.

The beneficiaries are two local nonprofits: Table, an Orange County nonprofit that targets hunger relief, and the Inter-Faith Council for Social Service, a homeless outreach organization that offers beds, meals, medical care and other services.

The trucks that will be serving food include:

  • Baguettaboutit: Baguette sandwiches featuring local sausages and specialty sauces. @baguettaboutit
  • Cocoa Cinnamon: Select coffee, teas, spices and handmade chocolates. @cocoacinnamon
  • Chirba Chirba:  Asian street fare truck specializing in Chinese dumplings. @ChirbaChirba
  • Parlez-Vous Crepe: Made-to-order sweet and savory crepes. @parlezvouscrepe
  • Monuts Donuts: A mix of classic and modern donut flavors. @monutsdonuts
  • Triangle Raw Foodists will be there from 7-9:30 p.m. @TrnglRwFoodists

All trucks will donate a portion of their proceeds to the charities as well as collect nonperishable food items and donations.

The Triangle's biggest Food Truck Rodeo to date will be Sunday in Durham

Brian Bottger, who manages the Only Burger truck, called this morning to tell me about the biggest food truck gathering to date in the Triangle. It will be from 5:30-8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 14 at Durham Central Park, where the Durham Farmers' Market meets on Foster St.

Bring your lawn chairs and maybe umbrellas to stay out of the sun.

Here is a list so far of those trucks who will be in attendance: Only Burger, Pie Pushers, The Parlour, KoKyu BBQ, The Grilled Cheese Bus, Parlez-Vous Crepe, Farmhand Foods, Slippin' Sliders, Klausie's Pizza, Don's Classic Ices, Sweet n Savory, Kona Ice and Locopops.

A few more trucks may RSVP before Sunday so check back for an updated list.

Johnny's of Carrboro has closed but will reopen under a new name

I got a call this morning (Monday, June 26) from Brian Plaster's fiancee, Courtney Buley. So let me take another stab at this blog post today.

Johnny's of Carrboro at 901 W. Main Street has closed. Owners Jan Halle and Brian Plaster, have parted ways. Plaster owns the business name and therefore Halle, who plans to renovate the space and reopen, will have to find a new name for her business at that location. Halle, who said she owns the building, said last week that she hoped to reopen in about 10 days.

During the renovation, food trucks will continue to gather in the Johnny's parking lot, including Parlez-Vous Crepes.

Meanwhile, Plaster has bought the Frosty's Trading Post business at 2143 Jones Ferry Road in Pittsboro and is operating a similar concept in the old country store. Buley says it is more grab-and-go than Johnny's was but they offer local eggs and milk like at Johnny's.
