What to Watch on Thursday: Daddy issues on "Vampire Diaries"

Big Bang Theory (8pm, CBS) - Sheldon takes acting lessons from Penny, hoping they will make him a better teacher.

$#*! My Dad Says (8:30pm, CBS) - Ed (William Shatner) gets jealous when a wealthy suitor (Lee Majors) tries to woo Rosemary (Jean Smart). I don't like this show and I'm only mentioning it out of my allegiance to "The Six Million Dollar Man" and "Designing Women."

"Million Dollar Listing" (9pm, Bravo) - Season 4 opens with a new cast member (Josh Altman replaces the insufferable Chad Rogers) tangling with an angry seller trying to market his chic home.

Community (8pm, NBC) - Annie stages a play with an anti-drug message at a local middle school, but the production hits a snag when Pierce lets his creative side run wild. As the conflict intensifies, Senor Chang unexpectedly steps in to restore order.

Bones (9pm, Fox) - Before the final appeal of her death sentence, Heather Taffet, aka The Grave Digger, is hit by a sniper's bullet, but the Jeffersonian team's ensuing investigation could point to either Booth (David Boreanaz) or Max (Ryan O'Neal, right) as a suspect.

What to Watch on Thursday: "Parks & Recreation" returns on NBC

Community (8pm, NBC) - Shirley (left) has big news for the group now that her ex-husband (Malcolm-Jamal Warner) is back in her life. "The Office," "30 Rock," and "Outsourced" are also all new tonight.

American Idol (8pm, Fox) - Auditions continue. Check back on Friday for our take on the new judges.

Perfect Couples (8:30pm, NBC) - This is officially the premiere of this new NBC sitcom, but they already aired an episode several weeks ago, right? It's about three sets of couples struggling with their relationships.

Royal Pains (9pm, USA) - The show returns with Hank and Evan learning more about Eddie after his heart attack.

Piers Morgan Tonight (9pm, CNN) - Ricky Gervais is the guest.

Parks and Recreation (9:30pm, NBC) - We're so happy to welcome this show back for Season 3! Tonight, Leslie (Amy Poehler) enlists Ann's help in persuading auditors (Rob Lowe and Adam Scott) to give the Parks Department more money. Elsewhere, Ron and Andy start coaching youth basketball and April has some surprising news.

Fairly Legal (10pm, USA) - A new show that fits nicely in the USA family. This one is about a lawyer-turned-mediator who tries to save her recently deceased father's firm while dealing with her own personal problems. It's enjoyable and the lead (Sarah Shahi) is likable.

Synthetic turf coming to Cedar Falls Park

The Chapel Hill Town Council formally accepted a $623,000 grant Tuesday from Orange County.

The grant will allow Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation Town to convert a turf softball field at Cedar Falls Park to a synthetic surface athletic field suitable for multi-purpose use.

Adoption of Tuesday’s resolution also authorizes the town manager to apply for a $500,000 Parks and Recreation Trust Fund (PARTF) grant, which would provide the required local match for the Orange County grant along with additional funds for the project.

The project will include demolition of the existing Cedar Falls Park No. 1 softball field and the installation of a synthetic turf field in place of the  grass.
Renovation is planned for a portion of the parking lot, new fences, new site furnishings, Americans with Disabilities Act improvements and lights.

What to Watch on Thursday: NBC comedies are all new

Community (8pm, NBC) - NBC comedies are all new again this week, and "Community" and "Parks & Recreation" will most likely continue to outshine "The Office" and "30 Rock." But I'd still watch them all. On "Community," the gang discusses the attraction between Brita and Jeff, and on "Parks & Rec," Leslie (Amy Poehler, left) hosts a local telethon and lands former NBA player Detlef Schrempf to assist. "30 Rock" has a Mother's Day special, featuring Jack's mom (Elaine Stritch), Jenna's mom (Jan Hooks), as well as others. Buzz Aldrin also makes an appearance.

Grey's Anatomy (9pm, ABC) - Seattle Grace treats a 700-pound patient, and Derek faces a late patient's husband in a wrongful death deposition.

The Mentalist (10pm, CBS) - A math genius is shot to death by a clown.

The Marriage Ref (10pm, NBC) - Tonight's panel is made up of Jerry Seinfeld, Gwyneth Paltrow, and comedian Greg Giraldo.

What to Watch on Thursday: Tim Conway guest stars on "CSI"

Community (8pm, NBC) - I'm sorry, but this show is way funnier than "The Office" or "30 Rock" right now, so you should be watching. Tonight, Jeff and Brita go head-to-head with school bullies and their moms (Lisa Rinna), and Troy and Abed make a list of goals to complete before graduation.

Parks & Recreation (8:30pm, NBC) - Also funnier than "The Office" and "30 Rock."

CSI (9pm, CBS) - Tim Conway and Jennifer Tilley guest star in an episode in which a legendary comedian is found murdered shortly before he's scheduled to reunite with his old partner.

Private Practice (10pm, ABC) - Violet is back and wants joint custody of Lucas, so Pete (Tim Daly) hires a tough lawyer and everyone in the office faces seeing their private lives made public in court.

The Marriage Ref (10pm, NBC) - The panel tonight includes Sarah Silverman, Matthew Broderick, and Martin Short.

The "Parks & Recreation" summer catalog

Last night's excellent episode of NBC's "Parks and Recreation" centered around Leslie Knope's efforts to put together the city's summer catalog for the Pawnee Parks Department.

Here's that catalog.

You can read about all the featured classes, including "Get Digital" (learn DOS and Lycos!) and "Raccoon Trapping" (never again fear raccoon attacks!).

But the staff bio section is the best. Did you know that April (featured on the cover) was born in Bjork's house in Iceland and enjoys reading "Family Circus" and traveling through time? She's also in charge of the bio section of the catalog, and no one checks over her work.

What to Watch on Thursday: FlashForward returns to ABC

NCAA Basketball (WRAL) - It's going on pretty much all day, folks. Grab your bracket and tune in.

FlashForward (8pm, ABC) - The show is back after a fairly long hiatus. Hope you caught the refresher Monday night... Tonight, Mark (Joseph Fiennes) must meet with a therapist before being cleared for work, but that doesn't stop him from investigating Lloyd's abduction. (And yes,  Fiennes looks very close to groping Shohreh Aghdashloo in the photo at right).

Parks & Recreation (8:30pm, NBC) - Jerry gets mugged by some kids in the park, so Leslie sets up a meeting with the head park ranger (Andy Samberg from "SNL") to discuss park safety.

Archer (10pm, FX) - In the season 1 finale, questions about the identity of Archer's father lead him into a trap, and a confrontation with Malory.

Real Housewives of New York (10pm, Bravo) - Kelly tries to explain her decision to pose in Playboy to her young daughters. Awkward.

What to Watch on Thursday: "Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains" brings back faves

Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains (8pm, CBS) - The show's 20th installment has 20 former castaways on the island of Samoa and divided into groups of Heroes and Villians. Rupert (right) is one of the show's most popular Heroes.

Parks and Recreation (8:30pm, NBC) - Leslie tracks down her mom's old flame, played by John Larroquette, and Andy's band plays at a senior center.

The Office (9pm, NBC) - The CEO of Sabre (Kathy Bates) opposes the idea of two branch  managers, so either Michael or Jim must return to sales.

Grey's Anatomy (9pm, ABC) - You knew last week when they introduced a new handsome black anesthesiologist into the mix that Bailey would end up dating him.

Past Life (9pm, Fox) - This new show (about a psychologist and a cop who help people solve "past-life" mysteries) debuted Tuesday night after "Idol" and there's already a second episode. This is its regular night and time.
