School board questioning sample feeder patterns

Could the development of feeder patterns be more of a hold-up on the new Wake County student assignment plan than coming to an agreement on achievement-choice schools?

As noted in today's article, staff's update on the student assignment plan included discussion on achievement schools and a presentation on sample feeder patterns. During the meeting, board members said zilch on the achievement schools but went into detail on the feeder patterns.

"We know this is contentious," Superintendent Tony Tata said to board members in response to the feeder pattern concerns. "This is high stakes. We want your feedback to make this right."

N&O football previews (9-12)

No. 9 Panther Creek Catamounts

  • Panther Creek's surprised us all last year. The Catamounts lost senior leaders who weathered close games, dramatic comebacks and a tough schedule, but an outstanding offensive line will help. Read the preview by clicking here.

No. 10 Leesville Road Pride

  • They've had a coaching change and only five defensive starters return. But the Pride has been one of the best Triangle programs in recent years and has some playmakers. Read the preview by clicking here.

No. 11 Fuquay-Varina Bengals

  • Fuquay-Varina may have lost some of last year's stars, but the program speaks for itself. The Bengals are one of three 4-A programs to have won at least 11 games in each of the last five seasons. Read the preview by clicking here.

No. 12 Millbrook Wildcats

Jennifer Mansfield discusses school board candidacy on WPTF

Wake County school board candidate Jennifer Mansfield is praising the actions of the new school board majority while also warning that things have become too politicized.

In an interview Thursday on the Rick and Donna Martinez Show on WPTF, Mansfield highlighted he tightrope she's walking on of trying to get people who disagree with incumbent Kevin Hill to vote for her instead of Heather Losurdo.

"District 3 for the last four years has not had a voice for parents and students so that's first and foremost is to be a voice for District 3 residents," Mansfield answered when asked why she's running. "And we need somebody who's in there whose experienced and I've been doing this for over six years, been involved in school issues."

Panther Creek announces Daniel Hall baseball coach

Panther Creek announced today that it has hired Daniel Hall as varsity baseball coach. Hall becomes the second coach in Catamounts school history after Harry Jones took the Broughton head coaching job earlier this month.

Here is the release from the school:

Debating whether to build a high school first in Cary or Apex

Should a new high school on Green Level Church Road in Cary or on Humie Olive Road in Apex be built first?

As noted in today's article, that's an issue facing Wake County school board members deciding how to use nearly $100 milion in unspent bond money. The board could make the final call on Tuesday, which would also impact whether the district immediately starts work on a new elementary school in Wake Forest, a new elementary school in Wendell or a new middle school in northwest Raleigh.

As you guys may recall, staff had proposed in June two options for using bond savings and other cuts to fund some interim construction projects until the next bond issue goes forward.

Clark scores twice in national championship
