• P.J. Hairston and James Michael McAdoo both decided to return for the 2013-14 season. By the end of the 2012-13 season, Hairston developed into the best player on the team, averaging 18.2 points over the final 13 games.

To give you an idea of the strides Hairston, a scoring guard, made from his freshman to sophomore seasons, he made 13 3-pointers (in 27 attempts) in three ACC tournament games in 2013. As a freshman, Hairston made eight 3-pointers during the *entire* conference season.

Reggie Bullock leaving UNC: What it means for the Tar Heels

Without Reggie Bullock, James Michael McAdoo would take on a greater role for North Carolina -- if, that is, McAdoo returns to school. ROBERT WILLETT

CHAPEL HILL — So Reggie Bullock is leaving North Carolina one season early to follow his dream of playing in the NBA. This isn’t a surprising a decision. It’s probably the right decision, right now, for Bullock.

No, we don’t know how it will turn out. We don’t know where Bullock will be drafted in June, or what might have happened to his draft prospects had he decided to return for his senior season. But we do know this: Bullock comes from a meager financial background. The chance to make money now has to be appealing. And after three years, who knows how much more he could have improved in college.

UNC guard P.J. Hairston to return to school

CHAPEL HILL — P.J. Hairston will return to North Carolina for his junior season, he announced on Friday through Twitter and in a statement released by the school.

Hairston made the decision after consulting with his family and UNC coach Roy Williams.

CHAPEL HILL — Wendy Poteat, the mother of North Carolina sophomore guard P.J. Hairston, refuted on Sunday a report that her son had made up his mind to return to school for his junior season.

“We are still in the process and once the decision is made it will be announced by UNC,” Poteat said during a phone interview.

UNC coach Roy Williams: Bullock, Hairston and McAdoo hungry to do more

During a radio interview on Friday, UNC coach Roy Williams said Reggie Bullock, P.J. Hairston and James Michael McAdoo are enjoying college and are hungry to do more. ROBERT WILLETT

CHAPEL HILL -- North Carolina is still awaiting word on whether Reggie Bullock, P.J. Hairston and James Michael McAdoo will return to school or forego their eligibility to enter the NBA draft. But Tar Heels coach Roy Williams during a radio interview on Friday provided some optimism that all might return to UNC.

Speaking with Taylor Zarzour on WFNZ in Charlotte, Williams said “it’s still up in the air,” whether Bullock, Hairston and McAdoo would return.

“But we're much much closer to having all of them back than we were last year,” Williams said.

The questions that surrounded UNC – and their answers

North Carolina was a good shooting team during the 2012-13 season, but consistent scoring in the post eluded the Tar Heels. ROBERT WILLETT

CHAPEL HILL — You might recall that before North Carolina’s season-opener against Gardner-Webb on Nov. 9, I posted a list of 10 questions that surrounded the Tar Heels at the start of the season. You can read those 10 questions right here.

Little by little, UNC provided answers to those 10 questions as the season progressed. And now, with the season complete, those answers are final. So here goes – the questions that surrounded UNC then, and the answers to those questions now, with the season already a memory:

CHAPEL HILL — The mothers of Reggie Bullock and P.J. Hairston said on Thursday that their sons weren’t close to making a decision about whether to return to North Carolina or enter the NBA draft.

“He’s talking about it but I’m not for sure right now,” Danielle Brown, who is Bullock’s mother, said during a phone interview. “He’s trying to see what he wants to do.”

UNC players mum on possibility of leaving for NBA

All five of these players -- from left, Leslie McDonald, James Michael McAdoo, Marcus Paige, Reggie Bullock and P.J. Hairston -- will be eligible to return next season for North Carolina. But will they? ROBERT WILLETT

KANSAS CITY — North Carolina’s season came to an end on Sunday night with a 70-58 loss against Kansas in the NCAA tournament. So now the question that surrounds the Tar Heels is an obvious one: Who stays and who goes?

Dexter Strickland, UNC’s senior guard, has played his last game for UNC. Can the same be said for Reggie Bullock, P.J. Hairston and James Michael McAdoo?

I asked all three players for their thoughts on the future and their decision-making process. None of them had much to say, as you’d expect. But here it is, anyway:

UNC guard P.J. Hairston on becoming a starter: I am ready

P.J. Hairston led UNC with 23 points on Wednesday night at Duke. ROBERT WILLETT

CHAPEL HILL — Upon learning that he would enter North Carolina’s starting lineup for its game on Wednesday night at Duke, P.J. Hairston didn’t have much of a reaction. All he could think was, “OK. I’m ready.”

Hairston seemed to be. In his second start of the season, Hairston led the Tar Heels with 23 points, and he was their most consistent scorer during the second half of their 73-68 loss against the Blue Devils.

UNC guard P.J. Hairston improving after concussion but doubtful for Virginia Tech game

North Carolina guard P.J. Hairston is improving after suffering a concussion on Tuesday night, but it's doubtful he'll play on Saturday. ROBERT WILLETT

CHAPEL HILL — P.J. Hairston on Wednesday showed signs of improvement after suffering a concussion during North Carolina’s 82-70 victory at Boston College on Tuesday night, but in a statement UNC described him as “doubtful” for the Tar Heels’ game on Saturday at Virginia Tech.
