Purnell leaving Clemson for DePaul

Clemson coach Oliver Purnell is leaving the ACC to take on the coaching job at DePaul University, Clemson announced this morning.

Purnell coached the Tigers to three consecutive trips to the NCAA tournament the last three years but never advanced out of the first round. In DePaul, he'll be coaching a once strong program that has struggled in the Big East. No timetable for hiring Purnell's replacement has been publicly announced by Clemson.

Purnell gets two-year extension

CLEMSON — Oliver Purnell has agreed to a two-year contract extension that keeps him among the top highest-paid basketball coaches in the ACC.

Purnell is slated to make at least $1.35 million in guaranteed income next season, a bump from last season’s $1 million.

Georgia trying to help the ACC

Update: No such luck, Nevada's Mark Fox is the choice.

Georgia's trying to liberate one of the mediocre basketball coaches from the ACC. The Dawgs will meet with Clemson's Oliver Purnell and Miami's Frank Haith today to discuss their coaching vacancy, according to the AJC.

Georgia struck out with Mizzou's Mike Anderson and Oklahoma's Jeff Capel and is moving on to Plans C and D, although it's unclear in what order Purnell and Haith are in.

UNC's Ellington warmed up for Clemson

North Carolina guard Wayne Ellington's 23-point game Sunday against Miami — which included seven straight three-pointers in the second half — broke him out of a cold shooting spell.

But it also could be a good warm-up for Wednesday's game against Clemson, a team he notoriously sizzles against.

Three of the junior's best career games have come against the Tigers. Last year at Clemson, he capped his career-high 36-point performance with a game-winning three-pointer; later that season at the Smith Center, he swished 28 points, including five three-pointers. Then during the ACC tournament, he scored 24.
