What to Watch on Wednesday: Marg Helgenberger exits 'CSI'

Nova: Mystery of a Masterpiece (9pm, UNC-TV) - Nova examines the work of art sleuths who tackle "cold case" art mysteries as well as the criminal market in stolen and fraudulent art. Includes a look at image analysis which reveals a portrait purchased for $20,000 to be a lost work of Leonardo da Vinci, which revalues the painting at $100 million.

Criminal Minds (9pm, CBS) - A serial rapist in Houston known as "The Piano Man" resurfaces and assaults his previous victims. Meanwhile, Prentiss deals with the trauma of rejoining the team.

Touch (9pm, Fox) - The debut of a new drama in which a blue-collar New York widower (Kiefer Sutherland) gets help from a social worker and an educator in an attempt to bond with his emotionally troubled son, whose obsession with numbers appears to enable him to predict the future. Adrienne has a review.

CSI (10pm, CBS) - Catherine (Marg Helgenberger, right) makes the painful decision to leave CSI. This is the final episode for Helgenberger, who has been on the show for 12 seasons. She hasn't ruled out returning for an occasional guest spot.

Royal Pains (10pm, USA) - Members of a rock band become ill, forcing Hank and Divya to figure out the cause, but the prescription debacle puts a strain on their working relationship.

Hot in Cleveland (10pm, TV Land) - Victoria's daughter arrives for a visit with the news that she and Melanie's son are engaged. Meanwhile, Joy's blind boyfriend thinks she's 26 and Elka prank-calls the New York Yankees third baseman.

What to Watch on Wednesday: 'Idol' returns, Harry Connick Jr joins 'L&O:SVU'

American Idol (8pm, Fox) - Season 11 opens with auditions in Savannha, Georgia. Auditions will go on for quite awhile, with episodes airing on Wednesday and Thursday nights.

Nova: 3D Spies of WWII (9pm, UNC-TV) - A WWII Allied initiative to locate Nazi rocket bases is recalled. The program brought together experts from British universities and Hollywood to study 3-D stereoscopic photos of German territory that had been shot specially by Spitfires.

Happy Endings (9:30pm, ABC) - Penny decides to stop adapting her lifestyle to the guys she dates and elects to change them to be more like her. Her first attempt is with a thirty-something slacker who still acts like a teenager. Also, Max and Alex try to get Dave to stop wearing v-neck t-shirts.

Law & Order: SVU (10pm, NBC) - A private military contractor CEO is sexually assaulted following a run-in with protesters, and as the case is investigated, links are made to a conspiracy in Iraq. Harry Connick Jr. (right) begins a guest arc playing Executive ADA David Haden, who is also Olivia's boyfriend.

Inside Nature's Giants (10pm, UNC-TV) - The first installment of a new four-part PBS series looks at the sperm whale. That's right, the show dissects -- as in, performs an autopsy on -- a 45-foot sperm whale. Future episodes will study the monster python, the great white shark, and big cats.

Revenge (10pm, ABC) - Daniel proposes to Emily and Nolan convinces Emily not to act hastily. Meanwhile, Charlotte is upset when she learns she must return to living under Victoria's roof.

Top Chef: Texas (10pm, Bravo) - The chefs create a gothic dish fit for a queen, but the plate must embody the essence of evil. Whatever that means. Guest judge is Charlize Theron.

What to Watch on Wednesday: People's Choice and Chelsea Handler sitcom

One Tree Hill (8pm, CW) - The ninth and final season opens with Brooke adapting to family life with Julian and her new brood, and Clay and Quinn facing a puzzling complication.

Are You There, Chelsea? (8:30pm, NBC) - The premiere of a confusing new series about a sassy young bar worker, Chelsea Newman, and her group of twentysomething pals. The book is inspired by Chelsea Handler's book, "Are You There, Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea," but the Chelsea character is played by Laura Prepon. Adding to the confusion, Chelsea Handler, wearing a brunette wig, plays Chelsea's sister. So it's a show about Chelsea Handler starring Chelsea Handler, but Chelsea doesn't play Chelsea. Got it? Also, don't expect much.

People's Choice Awards (9pm, CBS) - Kaley Cuoco hosts this awards show, which recognizes fan favorites in movies, TV and music. Faith Hill and Demi Lovato perform.

Nova: Bombing Hitler's Dams (9pm, UNC-TV) - The story of a 1943 raid that employed a revolutionary bouncing bomb to destroy its targets: two gigantic dams in Germany's industrial heartland.

I Cloned My Pet (9pm, TLC) - A look at the social, scientific and financial ramifications of pet cloning. Okay, I understand the impulse, people. But just look at the over-crowded shelters!

Happy Endings (9:30pm, ABC) - Dave's father (Michael McKean) visits and brings along his new girlfriend (Megan Mullally), who just happens to be Penny's mother. Penny is happy for her mom but Dave is less than thrilled. Also, Alex buys a chatty, potty-mouthed parrot to keep her company at the story, and then suspects the Chinese restaurant next door to be a front for a brothel.

Face Off (10pm, Syfy) - Fourteen aspiring makeup artists face off the Season 2 premiere, which has them re-imagining characters from "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz."

What to Watch on Wednesday: New 'Nova' season and a healthier Deen

Nova: Deadliest Volcanos (9pm, UNC-TV) - The season premiere looks at the work of scientists who are studying active volcanoes in an attempt to learn how likely they are to erupt, when eruptions might happen, and how deadly they could be.

Not My Mama's Meals (9pm, Cooking) - Bobby Deen (son of Paula) prepares more healthful versions of his mother's decadent recipes. In the opener, Bobby makes a fresh fruit-bread pudding and a frozen chocolate pie.

Modern Family (9pm, ABC) - Manny's dad (Benjamin Bratt) pays another surprise visit, this time to take his son to the racetrack as a belated birthday present. Meanwhile, Phil starts to get his affairs in order after a doctor's appointment coincides with the end of his lifetime supply of razors.

Happy Endings (9:30pm, ABC) - Dave has a tough time wrapping his head around the fact that Penny is dating his psychiatrist, and Jane and Max get into a competition testing their vanity when they see who can go the longest wearing an unflattering outfit.

Revenge (10pm, ABC) - A party crasher causes havoc at Daniel's small birthday gathering, and Conrad and Victoria use Charlotte as they delve deeper into their bitter divorce.

What to Watch on Wednesday: An 'Iceman Murder Mystery'

Suburgatory (8:30pm, ABC) - George tries to change Dallas' low opinion of Halloween by showing her the fun side of fear, but he's in for a shock when her frequently traveling husband (Jay Mohr) comes home unannounced. Meanwhile Tessa's costume rubs the locals the wrong way. Note: "Modern Family" is a re-run tonight.

Nova: Iceman Murder Mystery (9pm, UNC-TV) - An autopsy on the 5000-year-old remains of Otzi the Iceman, the mummified corpse recovered from a glacier in the Italian Alps in 1991, reveals details of life during the Copper Age, including people's diet and the types of diseases they dealt with.

Happy Endings (9:30pm, ABC) - Jane and Brad spend a spooky evening house-sitting for suburban friends, while the rest of the gang celebrate Halloween at a warehouse party.

American Horror Story (10pm, FX) - In the first of episode in a two-part Halloween story arc, the line between the living and the dead is blurred at the mansion, where two previous residents give the Harmons some decorating advice. This one looks scary! Also, Rubber Man returns. (Part 2 airs November 2).

Revenge (10pm, ABC) - The Graysons begin to distrust their top security man, who refuses to go away quietly. Meanwhile, the tension between Emily and Tyler can no longer be contained.

Psych (10pm, USA) - Shawn and Gus suspect that Lassiter's mysterious new girlfriend (Kristy Swanson) could be responsible for a murder in which the victim's blood was drained.

Whitechapel (10pm, BBC America) - A new detective inspector investigates what looks to be an open-and-shut case involving the murder of a woman in London's East End, but things get complicated when the killings appear to be similar to one credited to Jack the Ripper more than 100 years earlier.

Penn & Teller Tell a Lie (10pm, Discovery) - Penn & Teller present six stories (such as how panning for gold can be done in the streets of New York City) and one of the stories is false.

What to Watch on Wednesday: Welcome to 'Suburgatory'

The X-Factor (8pm, Fox) - Auditions continue tonight and tomorrow night.

H8R (8pm, CW) - Tonight, Kim Kardashian meets a hater. In other words, Kim Kardashian meets America.

Suburgatory (8:30pm, ABC) - A new comedy about a single dad (Jeremy Sisto) who moves his teenage daughter (Jane Levy) from Manhattan to the suburbs so that she might be exposed to more wholesome influences. It's very funny (my short review). Also stars Cheryl Hines and Ana Gasteyer.

Happy Endings (9:30pm, ABC) - In the Season 2 premiere, Penny ponies up to buy  her first home, which she hopes will be just the thing to turn her life around. Meanwhile, it's the one-year anniversary of Alex and Dave's aborted wedding and Jane thinks the two exes should engage in an honest dialogue about the non-event.

Luther (10 pm, BBC America) - Idris Elba returns as the tortured British detective John Luther for four new episodes. When we last saw them, Luther; his homicidal stalker Alice; and Luther's wife lover are standing on a train platform, after Alice blew away Luther's best friend, a dirty detective. (We hear Alice has a smaller presence this time.) This season, Luther hunts down a masked killer.

Revenge (10pm, ABC) - Emily goes after the hedge-fund manager who helped get her father thrown in prison, and she and Daniel have their first date.

Nova (10pm, UNC-TV) - Survivors of the 2011 Japanese tsunami reflect on decisions that saved their lives. Features professional and amateur video of the disaster as it unfolded.

Extreme Couponing (10pm, TLC) - Two episodes tonight, but the 10:30 episode features a North Carolina woman. Read more about that controversial episode.

What to Watch on Wednesday: 9/11 from 'Nova' to 'Rescue Me' finale

Animal Cops: Houston (8pm, Animal Planet) - The new season opens following eight officers from the Houston SPCA who look for animal abusers and illegal exotic animals.

Nova: Engineering Ground Zero (9pm, UNC-TV) - Nova documents the construction of One World Trade Center and the National September 11 Memorial and Museum. Included, 1 WTC architect David Childs, Port Authority of NY and NJ director Chris Ward, NYC mayor Michael Bloomberg, and others.

Saved: 9/11/2001 (9pm, Animal Planet) - Tonight's episode of "Saved," a show which chronicles the stories of humans bonding with animals to cope with loss and tragedy, has a 9/11-theme. Included: a dalmation adopted by the mother of fallen firefighters and a Yorkshire terrier that helped a little girl who was traumatized by 9/11.

American Greed: 9/11 Fraud (9pm, CNBC) - A look at 9/11-related scams, including a family friend-broker who stole almost $250,000 from a 9/11 widow and a man who falsely claimed a loved one died in the 9/11 attacks in order to collect money from the American Red Cross.

Rescue Me (10pm, FX) - In the series finale, the guys at 62 Truck struggle to pick up the pieces and move on following a major fire. Meanwhile, at the Fire Academy, a new batch of probies hear a familiar speech from a new leader. "Rescue Me," which stars Denis Leary (pictured), debuted in 2004 and followed the lives of a group of New York City firemen in the aftermath of 9/11. Here's a nice essay on the show's relationship with 9/11 and the wounded city of New York.

Paranormal Witness (10pm, Syfy) - In the debut of this new series exploring personal accounts of paranormal experiences, a 5-year-old girl in Baltimore befriends an invisible girl named Emily, a seemingly harmless playmate who becomes malevolent toward the girl's family.

What to Watch on Wednesday: Nova looks at "Making Stuff Cleaner"

Nova: Making Stuff Cleaner (9pm, UNC-TV) - Part 3 of 4 of "Making Stuff" examines the science and business of clean energy. Included: a scientist who uses chicken feathers to make hydrogen-powerd cars safer, whether lithium batteries create a dependence on South America, and whether scientists can create batteries that run on molten salts.

Human Target (9pm, Fox) - Chance has a reunion with an inept private investigator (Tony Hale) when the girlfriend of the owner of a rival security firm needs protection.

Cougar Town (9:30pm, ABC) - Jules' ultimate Valentine's Day wish is for Grayson to reveal his true feelings, but she may have to keep waiting. Meanwhile, Ellie wants nothing to do with the holiday and Travis asks Laurie advice on what to get Kirsten. This is the only new ABC comedy airing tonight.

Hot in Cleveland (10pm, TV Land) - Melanie, Joy, and Victoria are smitten with Elka's lawyer, who's angling for an insanity plea before a judge (Sherri Shepherd), but his client loses interest after learning that her former beau Max (Carl Reiner) is getting married.

Law & Order: SVU (10pm, NBC) - A billionaire (Colm Feore) becomes a suspect in a sexual abuse case involving a teenage girl, and his highly paid attorney (Robert Klein) is able to make the case veer off course.

Marlins of Raleigh's second-place finish behind NOVA leads Triangle swim teams at Meet Near the Hill

Marlins of Raleigh swimmers led the Triangle contingent, breaking
one state record and four meet records in finishing second at the N.C.
Aquatic Club's Josh Weaver Memorial Meet Near the Hill held Friday
through Sunday at the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary.

The powerful NOVA swim club from Northern Virginia, ranked No. 4
nationally, ran away with the title, compiling 4,612 points against
teams from North Carolina, Virginia, South Carolina and Pennsylvania,
Marlins coach Paul Silver reported. More than 700 swimmers competed in
the long-course meet for "A" classification competitors. 

Triangle teams took second through fourth places.

What to Watch on Tuesday: Kristin Chenoweth returns to "Glee"

Dancing with the Stars (8pm, ABC)Melissa Etheridge sings two songs in an elimination episode which we hope sends homes the annoying "Bachelor" Jake.

NOVA: Mind Over Money (8pm, UNC-TV) - If you've got your mind on your money and your money on your mind, Nova can tell you why. It seems the brain actually misfires and makes us irrational when money is involved. A fascinating look at behavioral economics.

Glee (9pm, Fox) - Kristin Chenoweth returns as April Rhodes, to help Will save the glee club, while Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) puts her Cheerios (mostly Mercedes) on  a diet. Also, Kurt fixes his dad up on a date, hoping for a more normal family life.

Frontline: The Vaccine Wars (9pm, UNC-TV) -  A look at the controversy surrounding the vaccine regimen children face, including alleged links between vaccines and ADHD and Autism. A second episode of Frontline airs at 10pm ("The Dancing Boys of Afghanistan") looking at the practice of using adolescent boys for entertainment and sex by former warlords and businessmen.

The Good Wife (CBS, 10pm) - Alicia goes up against her former boss Jonas Stern, and considers using her knowledge of his dementia against him. Peter finds religion because, you know, it'll help with his appeal.
