Jared Hendryx of Jordan and Tyrone Outlaw, Jr. of Person share PAC-6 boys basketball player of the year honors. Jordyn Smith of Hillside win the girls' player of the year.

Hillside managed to sweep the PAC-6 tournament titles, defeating Southern Durham in the girls championship by three points and getting a last-second basket to upset 1-seed Person for the boys championship.

Orange High defended its own tournament by placing first at this year's 2011 Jim King Orange Invitational on Saturday.

The Panthers had two first-place champions in the 23-team field and had 12 different wrestlers place sixth or higher. Orange's 253 points were well clear of second-place Cary (187.5), third-place Northern Durham (161) and fourth-place Jordan (156).

One of the Triangle's top guards from last season will be playing Division I basketball for an in-state school next fall.

Gary Merrill, who was one of the state’s most successful high school coaches when he was at Northern Durham, is returning to the Knights to try to rebuild the tradition-rich program.

Millbrook assumes the top spot in the N&O girls high school basketball rankings after defeating previously top-ranked Green Hope in the sectional finals.

A showdown of one-loss Millbrook and one-loss Green Hope leads the 4-A lineup, while a Chatham County rivalry is renewed in the 2-A ranks as Northwood visits Jordan-Matthews.
