CHARLOTTE -- Michigan guard Darius Morris’ attempt at a tying shot caromed off the back rim with one second remaining Sunday afternoon, allowing No. 1 seed Duke to advance to the NCAA tournament’s West Regional semifinals with a 73-71 win at Time Warner Cable Arena.
The Blue Devils led by as many as 15 points in the second half, but guard Tim Hardaway Jr. scored seven of his 15 points in the final 3:09 to rally the Wolverines. A Hardaway 3-pointer with 1:27 remaining cut the deficit to 70-69, but Duke freshman guard Kyrie Irving made a 6-foot bank shot against a 1-3-1 zone with 31 seconds left.
Morris drove the lane for a layup with 10 seconds remaining, and Michigan immediately fouled Duke guard Nolan Smith. He made the first of two free throws with 8.6 seconds left, and Morris made a mad rush down the court for an attempt at the tying basket.
His final shot caromed off the rim, leaving Duke to celebrate coach Mike Krzyzewski’s 900th career win. Krzyzewski needs three more wins to break Bob Knight’s Division I record.

Duke's Smith questionable for today's game
Submitted by rpickeral on 03/12/2011 - 13:16GREENSBORO -- X-rays were negative on Duke guard Nolan Smith’s second left toe, a team spokesman said today, and the ACC Player of the Year is questionable to play in this afternoon’s league tournament semi-final game.
Duke’s Matt Plizga said the team wants to see how the foot responds during pre-game warm-ups before deciding whether the senior will play.
Smith hurt his toe with 6:48 left to play in Friday’s quarterfinal win over Maryland when he collided with Cliff Tucker’s foot, stubbing the toe. Smith did not return to the game.
Fowler: 5 thoughts on Duke's win over Maryland
Submitted by ssfowler on 03/11/2011 - 23:13GREENSBORO -- Duke's 87-71 win over Maryland in an ACC quarterfinal Friday night was impressive, especially considering Duke lost point guard Nolan Smith due to a toe injury (his second toe, to be exact) with a 65-60 lead and 6:48 to go.
Green: Smith now the question mark for Blue Devils
Submitted by rgreenjr on 03/11/2011 - 22:37GREENSBORO – On a night when one big question was answered for the Duke Blue Devils, another potentially bigger one was raised.
The Kyle Singler question? He’s fine. Singler eased plenty of minds when he opened the Maryland quarterfinal tournament game by hitting a couple of quick jump shots that seemed to sweep away the residue of some off-kilter performances recently.
He wound up with 29 points and looked like Kyle Singler is supposed to look in Duke’s deceptively lopsided 87-71 victory.
But what about Nolan Smith?
