"American Horror Story," a freaky new horror series from the team who brought us "Nip/Tuck" and "Glee," is easily the most polarizing new show of the fall season. Among television critics, there's very little gray area: you're either into it, or you despise it.
I think I'm into it.
I admit up front I have no idea what Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk are trying to do here. But I do know that "American Horror Story" is among the scariest things I've ever watched.
The series follows a couple as they move their teenage daughter to Los Angeles to try to heal their marriage and make a fresh start. The problem is they move into the most haunted house in the history of haunted houses. We're talking "gaping Hellmouth" kind of haunted. There are no romantic vampires or buff werewolves in this house. Right down to the last nail in the last creaky floorboard, this is a house of pure, ugly evil.

Law & Order: SVU (9pm, NBC) - As they did with Monday night's "Law & Order," NBC is offering back-to-back "SVU" to fill the Leno void at 10pm. In the first episode, Kathy Griffin guest stars as the leader of a lesbian rights group who assists the detectives as they investigate the murder of a member. And this should get viewers --
me). In tonight's one-hour season premiere, a young woman searches for the father she hasn't seen since she was three years old, and a mother searches for the daughter she gave up for adoption 40 years ago.
Faces of America (8pm, UNC-TV) - Henry Louis Gates uses genealogical research and DNA testing to help prominent Americans discover their ancestry. Tonight the focus is on Stephen Colbert, chef Mario Batali, Jordan's Queen Noor, and Kristi Yamaguchi.
The Human Spark (8pm, UNC-TV) - Alan Alda (right) hosts a three-part series that explores what makes us humans different from other species. Alda makes a trip to the North Carolina Zoo and interviews Duke Anthropologist Brian Hare. Immediately following tonight's episode, check out the UNC-TV original production, "North Carolina Scientists Explore the Human Spark."
Modern Family (9pm, ABC) - Ah, yes. This is must-see TV: Benjamin Bratt (left) guest stars as Gloria's ex-husband and Manny's infamously unreliable dad. We'll finally see where little Manny gets his swagger. Also, Phil suffers from kidney stones and Mitchell and Cameron try to sleep-train Lily.
Glee (9pm, Fox) - Now that Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch, right) is
Nip/Tuck (10pm, FX) - I guess in an economic downturn, boob jobs and tummy tucks get put on the back burner. That's why things aren't great at McNamara/Troy, and also why it's a good thing Dr. Mike Hamoui (Mario Lopez) has returned to LA with a very profitable niche specialty. I'm not sure exactly what that might be, but the photo at left (yes, it's from "Nip/Tuck") is intriguing. Tonight is the season 6 premiere.
