News 14 Carolina channel to change name by end of the year

In case you missed this news last week, here's an item from our sister paper The Charlotte Observer about a name change taking place at Time Warner Cable's News 14 Carolina channel:

News 14 Carolina, the 24-hour local cable news channel, will be changing its name by year’s end to Time Warner Cable News.
Alan Mason, the Raleigh-based vice president of News 14, said Friday that the rebranding will include all 13 of the TWC local channels across the country, including the flagship NY1 channel in New York City. Currently there are three different branding protocols for stations serving TWC cable systems in the Carolinas, New York and Texas.
By settling on one name, it makes it easier to share content between the stations without changing microphone flags three times for stories developed by the Washington or NYSE bureaus for regional distribution.
It will also end some confusion among viewers who don’t understand that the channel is an exclusive service available only on Time Warner Cable, said Melissa Buscher, director of media relations for the Carolinas. News 14 debuted in North Carolina a decade ago.
Newscasts will get updated graphics for the change, expected in the fourth quarter, said Mason.

The folks in New York have not been pleased about the rebranding of NY1. The New York Times recently published a list of criticisms in their City Room blog, including a this one from the Twitter feed of the band They Might Be Giants: “Time Warner — rebranding NY1 into TWC News might be your dumbest move since merging with AOL.” Ouch.

Local stations to air memorial service for Bill Friday live on Wednesday

UNC-TV, WRAL, WTVD, WNCN (NBC-17), and News 14 Carolina will all carry a live broadcast of the memorial service for former University of North Carolina President William Friday from the UNC campus in Chapel Hill at 10 a.m. Wednesday morning.

UNC-TV and WRAL will repeat the broadcast Wednesday evening at 7.

Friday died on October 12 at the age of 92. He was president of the UNC system for 30 years, from 1956 to 1986, a nationally-recognized leader in higher education, and was the host of UNC-TV's longest-running program, "North Carolina People with William Friday," which went on the air in 1971 and has been on the air weekly ever since. Friday had just launched the 42nd season of the show in August.

How local TV stations stack up in the quest for viewers

In case you missed it, here's the story from this weekend's News & Observer about the local TV news stations and what they're all doing to win viewers.

Nutshell: WRAL is the ratings leader overall, but WTVD rules with women. And tonight, former longtime WRAL anchor Pam Saulsby (left, with Wes Hohenstein and Penn Holderness) co-anchors her first nightly newscast on NBC-17.

There's lots of stuff here about Nielsen ratings and market rankings, and a UNC-CH journalism school professor offers context.
