North Carolina's 10 largest school districts oppose vouchers to attend private schools

Interim Wake County Schools Superintendent Stephen Gainey is among 10 superintendents who are raising concerns about equation changes being considered by the Republican-led General Assembly.

In a letter to the editor in today's Charlotte Observer, the superintendents of the state's 10 largest school districts object to providing vouchers for children to attend private schools. Various bills in the legislature would provide tax credits or scholarships for some students to attend private schools.

"On nearly every national survey of per-pupil spending (when all funding sources are counted), North Carolina is in the bottom 20 among the 50 states," according to the letter. "In recent years, education funding has been cut. Now that the economy is improving, is this the best and wisest use of money to strengthen our children’s education?"

Evaluating East Wake High's small schools

How much time should East Wake High be given to see if splitting it into four small schools is working out?

As noted in today's article, some are urging giving the school at least a few more years. But school board members are considering whether to pull the plug once a grant runs out at the end of the 2009-10 school year.

East Wake High's first small school began in 2005. The next began in 2006. The last two opened in 2007.

Disparities in courses at high schools

Your chances of getting an Advanced Placement class or foreign language in a high school vary widely across the district.

The disparities were highlighted in data shared at this month's student achievement committee meeting of the school board. The differences were noticeable enough that board members are talking about the need to make some changes.

For instance, staff presented data showing that Enloe High leads the way with 28 AP courses. But none of the four small schools that make up East Wake High had more than five AP courses with one school having none.
