Make your funk the P-funk with George Clinton on "Unsung"

Tonight at 10, tune in for a great episode of "Unsung" on TV One featuring funk master George Clinton.

Clinton, still active after 50 years in the business, was born in Kannapolis, and although he grew up in New Jersey, when he says North Carolina, you can hear North Carolina. (Maybe he spent his summers Down South.)

The episode has some great information, with smart talking heads, explaining Clinton's place in music history. Clinton's funk, we're told is a mix of psychedelic rock with a deep groove. One person, noting Clinton's spaceship and alien motif, calls his an "Afro-futurist." NC native Maceo Parker chimes in on the discussion as well.

The best thing about the episode though, is that it reveals why Clinton, in part, is still active: he's broke. The man whose music has provide a thousand rap samples (and some say should be worth $100 million) has never gotten a dime for the samples because of shady dealings.

Defense and aerospace manufacturer is moving HQ from New Jersey to Durham

Emrise Corporation, a manufacturer of electronic devices for the defense and aerospace industries, said today it is relocating its corporate headquarters from Eatonton, N.J to Durham.

The company's headquarters will be located at 2530 Meridian Parkway. Emrise officials could not be reached for comment today.

The move comes just days after Emrise completed the sale of its subsidiary, Advanced Control Components, which was based in Eatonton.

The company said it chose Durham because it considers North Carolina a business-friendly state.

"We are locating the company's headquarters in North Carolina because we believe it to be a business friendly state, particularly for Emrise," CEO Carmine T. Oliva said in a statement. "We also felt that remaining on the East Coast would keep our headquarters in a location central to our domestic and international operations and to our principal markets in North America and Europe."

Founded in 1983, the Company operates out of facilities in the United States, France and the United Kingdom.

Emrise had 307 employees at the end of 2009, according to company filings.

"Jersey Couture": The Garden State gets an upgrade

I guess we should blame "The Sopranos" for all the love New Jersey is getting these days. MTV's "Jersey Shore," Style Network's "Jerseylicious" and Bravo's "Real Housewives of New Jersey" all feature the Garden State.

Or at least the part that features boisterous Italians, tans, big hair and plenty of cleavage.

The latest entry is "Jersey Couture" (Oxygen, 10 tonight), which also features an Italian family, big hair and plenty of cleavage. But I'd say this show has more heart than the others. These people are not embarrassing.

New Jersey man indicted in death of UNC student mascot

A New Jersey man has been indicted in the death of Jason Ray, the UNC student killed in 2007 while walking along a busy roadway in northern New Jersey.

Ray was the popular UNC student who proudly donned the Rameses costume for football and basketball games. He was in New Jersey in March 2007 with the Tar Heels men's basketball team, and was struck by an SUV driven by Armen Hovsepian, a Paramus, NJ resident who was driving with a suspended license.

Ray's death hit hard in Chapel Hill, where Ray was well-liked and widely known. In death, he did some good. His organs and tissue were donated, and about 80 people benefited, including a diabetic who, after nine years of dialysis, received Ray's kidney and pancreas.

His life was also the subject of a feature story on ESPN and a multimedia project on ESPN.com.
