Not time to abandon interscholastic sports

One solution to conflicts between club athletic programs and interscholastic competition was suggested this week on the Sports Illustrated on-line site -- high schools should just quit fielding athletic teams.

High school football players who lose their helmets during play in the 2012 high school season must leave the field for one play according to a rule change adopted by the National Federation of State High School Association Football Rules Committee.

The National Federation of State High School Athletic Associations approved a measure today that will change the parameters on the 14 weight classes used in high school wrestling.

Track amends jewelry rule

The National Federation of State High School Association's approved a track and field rule that is more lenient than in the past for an athlete wearing jewelry. A team warning will be issued the first time an athlete is seen wearing jewelry in a competition instead of the athlete or relay being disqualified.

Guthrie wins national award

Wake County Schools athletics director Bobby Guthrie has been named
the national coach educator of the year by the National Federation of
State High School Associations.

N.C. coaches get accreditted

The N.C. High School Athletic Association does not require its coaches to take the National Federation of High School Association's Fundamentals of Coaching Class, but 3,950 coaches in North Carolina have taken the course. The course is required for coaches in many states.

North Carolina has had the sixth most coaches to take the course, trailing Arizona, California, Ohio, Oregon and Texas.

After completing the fundamentals class, coaches can become a Level 1 Accredited Interscholastic Coach by completing a First Aid for Coaches course and one sports specific course.
