Two coupon inserts coming in Sunday's N&O

Look for two coupon inserts -- one Smart Source and one Red Plum -- in this Sunday's home-delivered Final Edition of The News & Observer.

There will be a combined total of  92 coupons with a face value of $86. That may seem a little low, but I've had a look at the coupons and there are several that will make for some nice deals.

I'll have the coupon database updated and the best Sunday deals posted early Sunday morning, about the same time your paper hits the driveway.

That way, you'll have the most complete and up-to-date coupon information for the Triangle at your finger tips.

If you've been wondering how to use the database or have other basic coupon questions head over HERE to my Coupons 101 section.

Please note: Single-copy and State Edition papers may not contain all coupon inserts.

New CVS ad in Fourth of July N&O

Be sure to take note of the new CVS ad in today's Fourth of July edition of The News & Observer.

There's a 20 percent off savings pass on the front of the one-page ad, which gives you a 20 percent discount off most regularly priced items. As always with these kinds of coupons, please read the fine print for exclusions.

In addition, many of Sunday's sales continue, including the fantastic deal on Coke brand 2 liters for 79 cents. Limit 6.

Database updated with Sunday's new coupons

The News & Observer's  coupon database has been updated.

This Sunday's home-delivered Final Edition of The News & Observer contains just one insert -- a P&G with 60 coupons valued at $74.

Kind of slim pickings, I know. But most holiday weekends, we receive no coupons at all, so no complaints here.

Not familiar with the coupon database? You can access it on the right-hand side of the blog. There's a button at the bottom right to view it as a full-size page.
Or, you can download it as an Excel spreadsheet by clicking on the attachment at the bottom of this post.
It's a handy tool, listing every coupon we receive in the Sunday N&O and providing the most timely and detailed list of coupons in the Triangle.

New Sunday Coupons = new Super Double deals at Harris Teeter

It's time for Round 2 of Super Doubles at Harris Teeter, thanks to a new set of coupons from the Sunday newspaper coupon inserts.

I discovered at least one freebie and seven items for 50 cents or less.

Here are the very best of the deals I spotted:

Last chance to enter: Win a 13-week Sunday subscription to The N&O

If you're a coupon clipper, the Sunday newspaper can be a gold mine.

Even with all the growth in Internet-print and digital coupons, Sunday newspapers nationwide remain the source of nearly 90 percent of all coupons.

And here in the Triangle, that source is the print edition of the Sunday N&O.

So how would you like to win a free Sunday subscription to The News & Observer?

I've got one 13-week Sunday home-delivery subsciption to give away to one blog reader. If you already subscribe to the print edition, we'll extend your subscription by 13 weeks.

That's 13 weeks of free coupons.

To enter, please leave one comment or question below by midnight Tuesday, June 19. I'll pick the winner using random.org.

Roots, branches, politics and cartoons

With an election coming up this fall and North Carolina shaping up as a key battleground state, we're going to be in for a long stretch of overheated political debate -- some of which will probably involve accusations that the News & Observer is just a mouthpiece for liberal propaganda. It's not for me to say whether or not that's true. But it seems worth reminding one and all that a long, long time ago, the N&O was seen as a far different kind of mouthpiece.

For example, below is something a friend just pointed out and which I somehow missed until now: a 2008 album cover by the hip-hop band The Roots, paired with the 1898 cartoon it was based on. And this particular cartoon, an unbelievable bit of race-baiting called "The Vampire That Hovers Over North Carolina," was drawn by one Norman E. Jennette and published in the N&O on Sept. 27, 1898.

This September, as it happens, The Roots will be in Raleigh to play Hopscotch. Think they might have something to say about this?

(Thanks, Eddie.)
