Draft day update

Rather than answer all of your questions or respond to all of your comments individually, I'll do it all at once in this post.

And even if you haven't posted a comment with a question, there's some draft-day insight and speculation in here worth reading.

On a similar note, with all the problems with the move to our new blog server, it looks to me like the comment function seems to have some useful new features. Feel free to post your comments/suggestions/gripes here and I'll collect them and pass them along to our programmers.

The fourth Staal brother

The first three Staal brothers all went in the first half of the first round — Eric second in 2003, Marc 12th in 2005 and Jordan second in 2006 — but the youngest, Jared, could have a longer wait.

There’s no guarantee Jared Staal will get picked in the first round tonight, which would deny the Staal family a spot in hockey history. Only the Sutter family has had four brothers taken in the first round.

The NHL’s Central Scouting Service ranks Staal 43rd among North American skaters. The Hockey News ranks him 31st overall, TSN has him 50th and the Red Line Report rates him 114th.

While he may move up in the draft based on his name alone, there’s an outside chance Staal could be available when the Hurricanes come up in the second round, 45th overall. That could make for an interesting discussion at the draft table.

Potential picks at No. 14

Assuming the Hurricanes keep the 14th overall pick — instead of trading up, down or out of the first round entirely — here are a few players likely to be under consideration in that spot:

Alternate programming

If you'd prefer not to watch Friday's first round of the NHL Draft (7 p.m., Versus), feel free to slide on over to the NHL Network, where they'll be airing a replay of Game 7 of the 2006 Stanley Cup finals.

You should be able to catch most of the first two periods of that game before swinging over to Versus to see who the Canes take at 14th overall.

Saturday, 10 a.m., NHL Network
