N.C. State suspends Sweezy

N.C. State football player J.R. Sweezy has been suspended indefinitely after getting into a late-night fight with a shuttle bus driver in Mooresville last Thursday.

Sweezy, 20, was charged with misdemeanor assault and misdemeanor larceny, according to the Mooresville Police Department, after getting into a physical altercation with David Scott Magnuson and Nicholas Kaplan at 2:37 a.m. on March 18.

UAB 72, N.C. State 52

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Just when it all seemed to be coming
together for N.C. State — the teamwork, the toughness, the second-half
offense – it all fell apart.

The Wolfpack, winners of six of its previous eight games, couldn’t
score, didn’t defend, and ended its season with a 72-52 blowout loss to
UAB in the second round of the NIT on
Saturday.

Pack exceeds Lowe's expectations

With 20 wins, a successful ACC tournament and a win in the NIT, this
N.C. State team has exceeded coach Sidney Lowe's expectations.

After losing its three top scorers from last season, and top recruit to
prep school, the Wolfpack was picked to finish last in the ACC.

N.C. State-UAB tipoff set

The game time for N.C. State's second-round match-up at UAB has been set for 5 p.m. EST on Saturday. The game will be televised on ESPNU. The sixth-seeded Wolfpack advanced to play in Birmingham after beating third-seeded South Florida on the road on Tuesday.

Fourth-seeded North Carolina, which advanced to the second round by beating William and Mary, will play at Mississippi State at noon on Saturday; that game will be televised on ESPN.

If both local teams win, they would match up in the third round.

Leslie most interested in five

C.J. Leslie said Wednesday morning that he hasn't made a final list
of schools that he is considering, but that he is most interested in
Connecticut, Florida, Kentucky, N.C. State and Oregon.

Cothron concerned with playing time

Luke Cothron, the 6-foot-8 basketball forward at Red Springs Flora McDonald is no longer committed to N.C. State, but still likes Coach Sidney Lowe, the school and its fan base.

Iyer and Bowler run to victories in Raleigh's 28th Run for the Oaks

A threat of rain failed to keep more than 600 runners and walkers from
turning out for the 28th annual Run for the Oaks on Saturday in
downtown Raleigh.

The race is put on by the Raleigh
Parks and Recreation Department to raise money to plant oak trees in
the city known as the “City of Oaks.”

N.C. State junior Srini Iyer, 20, of Raleigh covered the 5K
route in 15:59, reported race organizer Jim Young of Young & Associates. Kimberly Bowler, 39, of Raleigh led the women with a 19:27 finish.

2010 Women's NCAA Tournament selections

For the first time in two years, no Triangle region ACC women’s basketball team was left out of the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament.

As expected, Duke earned an automatic bid and a No. 2 seed in the 2010 tournament, while ninth-seeded N.C. State and 10th-seeded North Carolina erased concerns that its programs would end the season without a place on a bracket line.

NCSU, Duke, UNC-CH make a Top 5 list

Three local universities are in the top 5.

No, not basketball.

(Obviously)

This time, we're talking green. As in, treating the environment well.

N.C. State, UNC-Chapel Hill and Duke make up three of the top 5 "Greenest Schools" in the southeast as named by Blue Ridge Outdoors magazine.

For NCSU, campus transportation alternatives were of particular note, according to this university press release lauding the ranking.

Duke was recognized in part for its commitment to become carbon-neutral by 2024. And UNC-CH was noted in part for reducing energy use by 8 percent per square foot since 2003, but was dinged for its coal plant, which has been the matter of some debate recently in Chapel Hill.

Emory in Atlanta took the top spot in the rankings.

UNC, State earn NIT bids

North Carolina’s season will continue. So will N.C. State’s.

Despite finishing a disappointing 16-16, the defending national champion Tar Heels earned a surprisingly-high No. 4 seed in the NIT – and will host a game against William & Mary at 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday night. N.C. State earned a No. 6 seed, and will play at South Florida
on 8 p.m. Tuesday.
