CARY--  The opportunities were there for Cardinal Gibbons but the Crusaders couldn’t convert in the NCHSAA 3-A state final against Charlotte Catholic. Instead the Cougars withstood the Crusaders last charge and held on for the 2-1 victory Saturday afternoon at WakeMed Soccer Park.

Catholic’s Jane Cline scored both goals and was named tourney MVP in helping the Cougars to their first 3-A championship.

Enloe coach's decision sparks awareness on physicals

It wasn't easy for Enloe girls basketball coach Pina Baker to tell her team in early February that it would have to forfeit nine wins after she discovered a player's physical expired during the season.

The Eagles, who were 16-5 at the time, eventually missed the state playoffs as the hole was simply too big to overcome with just a few weeks of the regular season left plus the conference tournament left.

But the notoriety of that case may have raised statewide awareness.

Why NCHSAA is sticking with four classes

After juggling the ideas of going to five or three classifications, the N.C. High School Athletic Association will stick with four for the next realignment. The decision comes after an study by SAS that broke down each possible realignment's ramifications.

The timeline for the next realignment was approved by the board. In November, the process of drafting NCHSAA conferences for the 2013-17 seasons will begin.
