UPDATE: Panther Creek accepts NCHSAA's ruling after NCHSAA responds

Last night, Panther Creek filed an appeal with the N.C. High School Athletic Association over the exclusion of its boys basketball team from the state playoffs.

This morning, NCHSAA commissioner Davis Whitfield responded saying there would be no change that would admit Panther Creek to the boys basketball playoffs. And later today, Panther Creek athletics director Todd Schuler said the school will accept the NCHSAA ruling.

In Whitfield's response to Panther Creek's appeal, he says that the Board of Directors did not change the qualification process in December. For the 4A bracket, that meant still having one wildcard from the east and one from the west.

Seeding for basketball decided - here's the entire state east-to-west

The NCHSAA has figured out how it will seed its boys and girls basketball playoffs. It was first reported last night by Phillip Gardner of the Gaston Gazzette. Today, the N&O has also obtained a copy of the email, and here are three main bullet points:

  • Nothing changes as far as the number of teams in the bracket (64) or how teams qualify (number of automatic bids, wild cards, process of a conference tournament champion earning a 2-seed are still the same).
  • Unlike in years past, the qualifying teams are split by geography into four pods (West, Midwest, Mideast, East). The fourth and fifth rounds are the regionals - and unlike in years past teams will not be reseeded for it.
  • The 1-seeds are ordered by overall record (ties can be broken by head-to-head or draw), and then the same with the 2-seeds, 3-seeds, 4-seeds, 5-seeds and wild-cards. Each pod will then have its own 16-team bracket where the 1-seed hosts the 16-seed and so on.

Just like with football, knowing where your team is located east-to-west will be important. But unless you've got a handy map of every high school's longitude coordinate, figuring out pods can be difficult.

Let me help.

Attached is a spreadsheet that I've created of every NCHSAA team. The list includes the school name, its current classification, its ADM number at the time of last year's football playoffs and -- yes -- it's longitude coordinate.

Panther Creek, Green Hope make realignment requests

Green Hope and Panther Creek made requests to the N.C. High School Athletic Associaton on Tuesday to place the schools in a league with other current Tri-Nine 4A schools.

Postseason basketball qualifying methods stay the same

The N.C. High School Athletic Association clarified at least one part of its new playoff format for the boys and girls basketball playoffs.

While the NCHSAA is switching from its old playoff structure to one much that looks much like how the football brackets are decided, it will not be changing how teams qualify for the playoffs.
