Explaining and breaking down the NCHSAA changes to automatic state playoff qualifying

As noted in today's story from the NCHSAA board of directors meeting, change is coming to next year's playoffs in most sports. For seven different sports, where 64-team brackets are primarily used, the number of automatic qualifying spots in the postseason has changed.

Previously, the metric used been half-plus-one. But as we reported earlier this year, some classifications were going to have more than 64 automatic qualifying teams next season if that had stayed the same.

These numbers were calculated looking at next year's realigned conferences.

NCHSAA board of directors meeting quick hits: did not pass resolution on non-boarding parochial schools

Tim Stevens will be reporting with more from the NCHSAA board of directors meeting later today. Stay tuned for a longer story on nando.com/preps after commissioner Davis Whitfield meets with the media

The NCHSAA board of directors did not pass a motion that non-boarding parochial schools who were successful in their sport would move up a class. It will stay the same next year, which keeps Cardinal Gibbons in 3A for all sports - regular-season and playoffs.

The proposal that the board agreed upon in principle in December included moving teams up a class (in the playoffs only) if they had: advanced to the regional semifinals in six of the preceding eight years OR made the regional finals in four of the previous six years OR made the state finals in three consecutive years in its current classification.

That story is at this link: http://www.newsobserver.com/2012/12/07/2529555/nchsaa-board-agrees-to-changes.html

The NCHSAA board also voted that transfers from one NCHSAA school to another school within its own LEA (local educational agency) or between LEAs will be ineligible for 365 days without a bonafide change in residence or LEA approval. The LEAs can have their own rules to override the NCHSAA. The NCHSAA rule simply sets a statewide standard.

Spring football practice did not get to the board - it did not get out of committee.

The basketball playoffs will continue to use seeding, but will have minor tweaks like every conference only getting half automatic bids instead half-plus-one. For the Cap-8, for instance, the league would get four automatic bids instead of five.

Seeded playoffs will be added to boys and girls soccer next year as well.

Cary forfeits regular-season finales to Athens Drive

Cary's varsity girls' and boys' basketball teams were forced to forfeit tonight's season finales against Athens Drive to prevent the school from surpassing the maximum number of regular-season games allowed by the N.C. High School Athletic Association.

Cary had been approved for multiple endowment games, but endowment games in general cannot extend the season (go over the maximum).

The wording in the NCHSAA handbook had Cary officials thrown off.

In the basketball part of the handbook, it says: "an Endowment game may be played, which does not count against the season limit."

In the endowment game section of the handbook, it says: "These games are optional, one per sport. Exceptions to one Endowment game per sport require NCHSAA approval. They may not extend the season, and do not count against the season limitation in that sport and will not be used as part of the tie-breaking system."

Cary read that as multiple endowment games don't count against the season limits. The NCHSAA's definition of a regular season (that can't be extended), however, is 23 games or 24 with one endowment.

Wells Fargo Cup NCHSAA standings after fall sports season

The N.C. High School Athletic Association announced the Wells Fargo Cup standings for fall sports in the Wells Fargo Cup competitions for the 2012-13 academic year.

The standings are based on a points system that stems from postseason success.

Green Hope leads the 4A standings, Cardinal Gibbons leads the 3A standings and Carrboro leads in 2A. All three of those Triangle schools won the Wells Fargo Cup for their classifications last season.

Leading 1A is Lake Norman Charter. The top Triangle-area school is Franklin Academy (5th).

Below is the top 15 for each classification.

Ejection-free so far

The NCHSAA listed on its website all of the member schools who are ejection-free after the fall sports season. Last year, only 17 schools in the greater Triangle area were ejection-free after the fall, winter and spring sports seasons.

We've sorted them by Triangle-area counties:
