An engineering professor at North Carolina A & T University has won the UNC system's top faculty honor.
Jagannathan Sankar, the Distinguished University Professor of mechanical engineering and White House Millennium Researcher, won the O. Max Gardner Award, the top faculty award given by the UNC system.
Sankar received the award this morning at a meeting of the UNC system's Board of Governors.
Sankar, who has spent 27 years on the Greensboro campus, is recognized as one of the world's leading authorites on the development of advanced biolaterials and smart structures. His work is expected to improve medical implants and surgical procedures.
Sankar is the author of more than 400 peer-reviewed articles, book chapters and scientific papers and he has generated more than $45 million in research funding for N.C. A & T.
