Back-to-back singles by Maybin and Cousins with one out in the sixth and a pitch that got away from reliever Steve Marek and hit Lee Mitchell loaded the bases set the Mudcats up once again but Marek got a double play ball to get out of the inning.

Mississippi makes the best of its chance to score in the bottom of the fifth after J.C. Boscan, who reached on a Coghlan error, is thrown out Raynor to Mitchell to Davis on J.C. Holt's double off of the left field wall. Matt Young bounces a ball high off of home plate and Coghlan can't get to it in time as Holt scores from third.
Carolina wastes an opportunity in the top of the fourth. Maybin picks up an infield single that a wild throw turns into a man on second with no outs. Scott Cousins walks, putting two runners on with no outs. Mitchell tries to bunt the pair over but can't. During his at bat, Maybin is thrown out for the first out trying to steal third. Mitchell is eventually hit by a pitch, putting two runners on with one out.
