Familiar names being nominated for Wake County school board advisory councils

Some familiar names are on the list of people being nominated Tuesday for placement on Wake County school board advisory councils.

The nominees for school board member Jim Martin's BAC include former Assistant Superintendent Mike Burriss and Ann Overton. Diana Bader has been nominated to serve on school board member Debra Goldman's BAC. Karey Harwood has been nominated for board vice chairman Keith Sutton's BAC.

Some of the new BAC members were nominated by other people.

CORRECTION

Harwood was nominated to school board vice chairman Keith Sutton's BAC.

Delays in installing modulars

It's apparently not easy getting modular classrooms moved quickly, as the folks at Panther Creek High School in Cary can attest.

School administrators told the board this week that the projected completion date for installing 22 modular classrooms at Panther Creek is now Jan. 30. The original projected date had been Aug. 15.

Back in September, administrators said they hoped to have the units ready by Dec. 18.

Extending administrative contracts

The school district's senior administrators are getting some job security.

On Tuesday, the school board voted to extend the contracts of Superintendent Del Burns' leadership team through June 30, 2012. It matches Burns' contract status.

Mike Burriss, assistant superintendent for facilities, is on that list. But he's leaving later this year to take a job in the private sector.

Appealing the Broughton decision

I won't belabor the issue for those who don't think it's a big deal, but Wake will appeal the rejection of the parking lot at Broughton High School.

Mike Burriss, assistant superintendent for facilities, said the school asked his office to contest the Raleigh Planning Commission's decision. The Raleigh City Council will hear the request to turn Broughton's front lawn into a parking lot on Tuesday.

If this week's hearing was any indication, it could get pretty emotional when the alumni turn out on Tuesday. The meeting is at 1 p.m. in the Council Chambers, 222 W. Hargett St.

Panther Creek's modular problems

The crowding problem at Panther Creek High School these first few weeks of school has generated a good bit of media coverage.

The combination of rapid growth around the Northwest Cary school and the inability to get 22 modular classrooms set up before classes began has slammed Panther Creek. As was noted last week, students are using the media center and the auditorium until the modulars are installed.

The situation has raised questions about the process Wake uses to install modulars. It's also pointing to how high school students will likely be reassigned in 2009.
