LIVE BLOG: Final day, boys Glaxo

Final: Ravenscroft 57, Middle Creek 52

Ravenscroft did just enough to win this championship, their first ever at the Glaxo. Anton Gill was named the tournament’s MVP after a 16-point performance that also included guarding Middle Creek’s best scorer in guard Leon Hargrove. The Ravens didn’t make a lot of free throws late in this game, which allowed it to be close, but their defense remained solid in the final seconds to get a steal with five second to put the game out of reach.

Give credit to Middle Creek. They did a nice job after trailing by 18 points in the third quarter. The Mustangs were led by Hargrove’s 21 points.

Board adds nodes for consideration in 2011-12 reassignment plan

The Wake County school board expanded the potential scope of the 2011-12 student reassignment plan but still have a lot more to discuss.

As noted in today's article, the board agreed to add for consideration a number of moves not recommended for staff for next year. These are among a list of deferred moves that were brought up in the spring.

That includes the Middle Creek to Garner High moves advocated by board member John Tedesco. Board members took the approach that they'd rather send notice to parents they're considering the moves so as to get input over the next month.

UPDATE

Wake will send notices to parents if they're in the nodes added for consideration on Tuesday. But if you want to check now, click here to find out your node number to see if you're affected.

Tedesco still lobbying for the Middle Creek High to Garner High moves

Wake County school board member John Tedesco says he hasn't given up his quest to bring home to Garner High the students who live in town near the school.

Earlier this year, Tedesco had unsuccessfully proposed the reassignment to Garner High of students who live in historic downtown Garner but who now go to Middle Creek High near Apex. You're likely to see a renewed push at today's board work session.

"I'm asking for hundreds of kids who live in the poorest part of Garner to come back home to Garner and I know what those nodes look like," Tedesco said at last week's board meeting. "They look like 80-90 percent African American families and you know what they say to me all the time, 'Mr. Tedesco I just want to go to school across the street.'"

Staff plan would reassign 3,224 students next year

The new staff recommendation for the 2011-12 Wake County student reassignment plan is significantly different from the one that the old board had adopted in 2009.

The new plan would reassign 3,224 students for next year. The old plan would have moved 1,479 students. The new plan also calls for opening Walnut Creek Elementary School on a traditional calendar instead of a year-round one.

The plan incorporates some of the moves proposed at last week's student assignment committee meeting. But staff says most weren't added because they go beyond the scope of the Oct. 5 directive calling for adjustments to the 2011-12 plan.

Thursday predictions for Thursday/Friday night (2nd round)

We're down to four Tri-Nine teams in the playoffs. At least one of them will assuredly go home while the other moves on.  We will have all of these area games and more covered Friday night on the N&O's high school sports page.

I also went with co-games of the week for the first time all year as both of these re-matches are just too good to pass up.

CO-GAMES OF THE WEEK

Fuquay-Varina at Panther Creek

Middle Creek at Garner
