Rapid Reaction from Ravenscroft's win over Middle Creek

RALEIGH – Here’s our rapid reaction after Ravenscroft defeated Middle Creek 59-57 Wednesday night in a nonconference game:

HOW THE GAME WAS WON

Ravenscroft surrendered its lead late in the fourth quarter only to have guard Anton Gill (pictuted left) make a fadeaway three-pointer at the buzzer to win the game. Madison Jones was the difference in the final play as he was able penetrate into the lane to bring Gill’s defender over to cover him. That allowed Gill to be wide open in the corner to make his three-point basket just before the buzzer sounded.

TURNING POINT

This is a tough one to call, but Middle Creek gave Ravenscroft a chance to win the game by going to quickly on its final possession. The Mustangs were trailing by one with less than a minute left and could have held the ball for the final shot. Instead guard Donta Davis was fouled by going to the basket with 17 seconds left. Although Davis made both free throws to give the Mustangs the lead, it also allowed Gill to have time to make his game-winning shot.

STAT OF THE GAME

Gill is a very good shooter from behind the ach as he averages 53 percent from three before tonight’s game. Gill had plenty of chances to make three-pointers, but his one at the buzzer was his only three-pointer of the game.

Another Murdock, another MCHS record

Just one day after her fraternal twin sister broke the school's career assists record, Brittany Murdock broke Middle Creek's career record for 3-pointers. Both sisters are in their fourth season on the Lady Mustangs' varsity roster.

Middle Creek senior Casey Murdock (pictured above, No. 5 in red) broke the school's career assist mark last night in a 62-42 win over Fuquay-Varina.

Murdock has 160 and counting, breaking Kristi Gardner's old mark of 156. Murdock, a four-year varsity point guard, has 29 through 13 games.

School board expands size of 2011-12 reassignment plan

I'll get into more detail later, but the Wake County school board has sharply increased the number of students under consideration for reassignment for the 2011-12 school year.

The biggest clump of additions to the plan come from agreeing to put into consideration these moves that staff said they wanted to recommend but didn't do so because it would have involved moving students who've already recently been reassigned. They're mostly involving cleaning up feeder patterns caused by the staff changing from the original three-year plan the nodes going to Walnut Creek Elementary.

Throw in a whole bunch of nodes, mostly agreed to from the Dec. 14 meeting,  that the board said they wanted to hear parents comment on. They're saying they're not necessarily going to move them.

N&O girls basketball rankings

Green Hope, the state 4-A runner-up in 2010, is No. 1 in The News & Observer high school girls basketball rankings.

The Falcons have lost two games in the past two seasons, both to 2010 4-A champion Matthews Butler.

Millbrook, the GlaxoSmithKline Invitational girls champion, is second in the rankings.

Southeast Raleigh, which is No. 3, plays at No. 5 East Wake on Tuesday, Jan. 4.
