I have to admit, I've never, ever had a clue about any first couple's anniversary, but the Obama's 17th wedding anniversary seems to have made a small stir. I'd like to think it's because Michelle looks pretty fab hitting the town with her hubby in this black, backless halter dress. She's pretty smokin' in her LBD! But the fuss is probably because they decided to hit the town Saturday going to Blue Duck Tavern in D.C. to celebrate rather than ringing up the White House kitchen to make dinner.

Michelle Obama spoke on health care Friday wearing a black and white graphic print skirt from Diane von Furstenberg's fall 2009 collection. Which just begs the question: What took you so long? It seems she's worn all the majors -- and more -- publicly except DvF.
The usual suspects are on the list ... Michelle Obama, Kate Winslet, Cameron Diaz and Beyonce. Freida Pinto gets a nod for "best use of color," while Nicole Richie takes home "best maternity style" and Taylor Swift gets "best sparkle." Here's a picture of Kate where she always wins for red carpet style, according to People. The magazine hits newsstands Friday.

So it turns out Michelle Obama hit on several big trends Wednesday night with her pinky coral suit, which, by the way, was made by Moschino.
First, the suit. Boots and suits for fall. Thank you, Vogue's September issue.
And then the color. It's one of the top 10 colors for spring, says Pantone Color Institute in it's latest color trend report.
Pantone today released its top 10 colors of spring fashion, colors the company says are "splashes of sunshine" and "vibrant brights."
To be honest, the colors feel very Reagan/early Madonna era to me, very 1984, with a bright turquoise, pink champagne, mustard yellow and pinky coral (the color of Michelle Obama's suit the other night!) among the colors.
They're wonderful bright colors that are happy and fun. And with any luck will inspire shoppers to start spending again, at lease in small doses.
“Now more than ever, women are vigilant when it comes to spending,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. “Instead of re-inventing their wardrobe at the start of each season, consumers want pieces to complement what they already own. Pairing a bold color with a basic piece or freshening up their look with bright accents addresses the need for practicality, as well as fun.”
I'm particularly taken with the spin on the classic red, tomato puree. It's almost a raspberry red that's rich and lovely with just the right dose of pink. I also love the violet color, which just makes me happy (apparently it's one that Lela Rose is using for spring. Love Lela Rose.).
So did she take to heart all the nasty words from all the sleeveless-dress haters out there? Or was it all the ridiculous drama over the shorts?
Michelle O showed up for the Prez's speech tonight looking mighty proper and covered up in her salmon skirt suit, with a bow at the neck, a jeweled brooch and with bracelet SLEEVES!
Completely different look from her last time at a joint session of Congress in a sleeveless dress (in January).
Also, love Jill Biden's navy ruffled top!

First the shorts, then the shoes. What a summer Michelle's had.
Apparently, the fashion press made a stink over the Crocs she wore out for lunch on Martha's Vineyard last week. No, not the kind that my hubby wears. The newer, more sandal-looking kind, which I thought were perfectly fine and even cute for a beach vacation. (Ok, maybe not Martha's Vineyard, but whatever, she's Michelle Obama.)
She apparently made up for her Crocs-faux pas by wearing asymmetric black sandals by Maison Martin Margiela, who is known for modern shoe designs. Check them out in the picture. (Personally, I like the dress more than the shoes. And check out those arms!)

I know some people this week were shocked, just SHOCKED! about Michelle Obama wearing "short" shorts on her recent hike at the Grand Canyon (Duh! What else would you wear?) But what I find even more fashion newsworthy is that she wore a black and beige print dress by Merona from Target when she arrived in Phoenix Sunday. Apparently, it came from an older collection and is no longer in stores.
Of course, it was just a matter of time, right? After wearing cardigans from J. Crew, T-shirts from Gap and dresses Talbots, you knew she was going to pull out some Target cheap chic at some point. Could H&M be next?!

Some of the fall looks from the First Lady's inaugural ball gown designer, Jason Wu, are now available in the Triangle. I got a call last night from the owner of Vermillion, Ashley Vermillion Harris, who said the designer is now being carried in the North Hills store.
Wu should likely become a local favorite because of his style of creating clean, classic lines with bright colors, a popular combination in this area. His creations are often described as modern but wearable. Likely he's best known lately, though, for his white, silk-chiffon, one-shoulder gown that Michelle Obama wore to the inaugural balls in January.
Will update more soon on what pieces and styles Vermillion is carrying for fall.

In case you missed the release of the list last week, there's a fun slideshow of who's on the list with some pretty cool fashion pictures, mostly shots of the list makers out and about.
Who's on it? Michelle O, of course. And POTUS joins her. Carla Bruni-Sarkozy made it. NYC's Mayor Bloomberg is on it as well as his companion Diana Taylor. Brad Pitt's on the list along with Anne Hathaway and Renee Zellweger. And designers including Tori Burch (shown here) Georgina Chapman, Rachel Roy and Stacey Bendet.
