How to see soaps disrupted by Michael Jackson services

WRAL, WTVD, and WNCN will all carry live coverage of the Michael Jackson memorial service this afternoon, which means soaps, game shows, and other normal programming will be disrupted.

WRAL says they will join "Guiding Light" in progress, depending on the length of the service, then "The Price is Right" at 3pm, and "The Young and the Restless" at 4pm.

WTVD says they understand that ABC is just skipping soaps today, so viewers shouldn't miss anything. Just to be safe, you might want to check out SoapNet, which shows repeats of ABC soaps. That's channel 63 if you have Time Warner Cable.

Not sure if NBC is skipping soaps as well, but WNCN says it will not show "Days of Our Lives" at an alternate time today.

Michael Jackson memorial service coverage on TV

Television is going to a full court press Tuesday for Michael Jackson's memorial service in Los Angeles, and the city of Raleigh plans a special tribute service as well.

For CBS, Katie Couric is already in LA for two straight days of coverage. She'll anchor the evening news from the Staples Center tonight and tomorrow night, plus a special episode of "48 Hours" Tuesday night at 10pm. The CBS "Early Show" will also broadcast from LA.

"Good Morning America's" Robin Roberts is already reporting from LA for ABC, and Charlie Gibson will anchor from LA on Tuesday.

Michael Jackson memorial service: It's on

With a public memorial service for Michael Jackson set for Tuesday in Los Angeles, the accompanying remembrance service in Raleigh is back on.

"Yes, we are going forward with it," says co-organizer Bruce Lightner. Originally, Jackson's funeral was going to happen today at his Neverland complex in California. But that was canceled after county officials declined to issue the necessary permits. So local organizers also canceled the Raleigh event, which had been set for 2 p.m. today at Time Warner Cable Music Pavilion at Walnut Creek.

Now the local program is happening at the Raleigh Convention Center, starting at noon Tuesday with an hour of performances by the Martin Luther King All-Children's Choir and other groups. A video feed of the funeral services at Los Angeles' Staples Center will take center stage at 1 p.m., simulcast on video screens in the convention center.

Admission is $5 to cover expenses. Tickets go on sale at 9 a.m. Monday at the Raleigh Convention Center box office, and also at the Progress Energy Center box office.

Michael Jackson memorial service: It's off

Nothing about Michael Jackson's death has been simple, including his funeral. There was going to be an extravaganza of a memorial service on Friday at the late singer's Neverland ranch in California, complete with a white horse-drawn carriage. Thousands and thousands of people were going to attend.

But the public funeral has been canceled, also forcing the cancelation of a Friday afternoon remembrance service at Raleigh's Walnut Creek. The Martin Luther King All-Children's Choir was to perform, along with a live feed of events in California on the venue's big screens.

"Our objective was to get a live feed of the funeral, but that's not gonna happen," said Raleigh organizer Bruce Lightner. "That was important, to connect with other cities across the country. So it did not make sense to move forward."

BET Awards 09: A Message to Michael

Timing turned the BET awards 2009 into the first televised tribute to the life and music of Michael Jackson.

And it was officially sanctioned -- father Joe Jackson was in the audience (with, naturally, Al Sharpton) and a brief, onstage, appearance by Janet Jackson. Clad in all-white, she teared up as she reminded the audience that while MJ was an icon to them, to the Jacksons he was family.

Reivers' second reunion show delivers sound, fury, good vibes

It's a shame you can't be two places at once, which would've come in handy on Saturday night. That's when Peter Holsapple and Chris Stamey were playing Cat's Cradle, but I was in Austin, Texas, for another reunion show by the Reivers. I've got no complaints, though, because it was pretty great, although it was less emotional than last year's reunion show (which marked their first performance since 1991). And it took place outdoors in the midst of an overpowering heat wave that felt more like the deepest dog days of August than June.

Still, there were warm feelings of fondness all the way around, from first song ("Warehouse Jam," an instrumental from the band's first single back in 1984) to last ("Ragamuffin Man," a Reivers signature since the late '80s). The vibe was very casual, a band playing for friends and family, which is basically what it was. And just for the occasion, they offered up a homage to the recently passed King of Pop, a cover of "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough."

At one point, I was missing my pal Peter Blackstock and wishing he'd been there -- he's one of the few people who is even more of a rabid Reivers fan than I am. Alas, he couldn't make it to Austin this time. But he called during the show, and I was able to let him listen a bit by cellphone. Even better, he was calling from that Holsapple/Stamey show at the Cradle.

It was the next best thing to being there, for both of us.

The Jacksons: An American Dream (12noon & 7pm, TV One) - This five-hour miniseries, which gave revealing glimpses into the lives of the Jackson children, originally aired on ABC in 1992 and stars Angela Bassett, Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs, Terrence Howard, Holly Robinson-Peete, Vanessa Williams, and Billy Dee Williams star. The film was based on the autobiography of Katherine Jackson, "My Family."

So You Think You Can Dance: results show

Guest blogger Lenni G. has her say:

Have to say that the results show really lost some of its importance when the death of Michael Jackson was announced earlier in the afternoon. Wow, what a week we've had - first Ed McMahon and then Farrah Fawcett and Michael on the same day. We were somewhat prepared to let Ed and Farrah go,
but certainly not Michael who was gearing up for a series of concerts.
May they all rest in peace, especially Michael who seemed to be
fighting some major demons these past several years.

On to the show, which opened with a great routine by two of my fav choreographers, Napoleon and Tabatha.

What to watch on Friday: Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson specials

Networks are scrambling so we're not sure exactly what will be on tonight, but expect more special Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett coverage for sure. Here's what we know about so far, but we'll try to update throughout the day if we learn of more.

The Michael Jackson: 30th Anniversary Celebration (8pm, TV One) - TV One originally planned to air "The Michael Jackson Story" but will air this special instead. It repeats at 11pm.  TV One will have special Michael Jackson programming throughout the weekend.

The Life and Death of Michael Jackson (9pm, ABC) - ABC News special coverage of Jackson's death and a look back at his career and controversial life.

Farrah's Story (9pm, NBC) - NBC is replaying the gut-wrenching documentary originally aired last month, which chronicles Farrah's fight against cancer.  It's worth watching, or at least taping if you're watching Jackson coverage.

UPDATE: MTV will continue playing Michael Jackson videos (that's right, MTV is playing actual music videos!) and Jackson footage all day today until 6pm. Starting at 6pm, MTV will air other special Michael Jackson programming. Their sister channel, MTV2 is also playing Michael Jackson videos and specials all day today and tomorrow.

BET is also currently playing Jackson videos and will air a "BET Awards" special at 5pm featuring a surprise performance by Michael, and will rebroadcast their tribute from Thursday tonight from 6pm to 7:30.
