Four Cary wrestlers in final USA Rankings

The final USA Rankings are in, and four Cary grapplers are among those named.

Sophomore Ben Creed and graduating senior Eloheim Palma have been ranked on the All-Class rankings, while junior Matt Colvard and graduating senior Gabe Brotzman — along with Creed and Palma — have been ranked in their graduating classes.

Colvard has the unusual distinction of being ranked in the top 30 in both the 145 and 160 classes, as he had been in both classes before the season and during the year.

Colvard was ranked 30th in the 160-pound class and 28th in the 145-pound class.

Creed, a two-time state champion, was ranked 21st in the 103-pound class.

Brotzman was a special mention in the 152-pound class and Palma was No. 1 in the heavyweight division after securing the national title this year.

Palma is currently on a fold out of the USA Wrestling Magazines All-Americans as he has been named to their “Dream Team.”

Palma also an All-American, advances to national finals; Colvard comes in 7th

Cary High's Eloheim Palma, ranked the No. 1 heavyweight in the nation, will have a chance to prove that claim after advancing to the senior NHSCA championship final. The senior finals will begin tomorrow night and can be seen on ESPN360.com at 7 p.m.

The run to the finals hasn't been easy going for North Carolina's top wrestler overall.

Colvard earns All-American status

Cary High junior wrestler Matt Colvard has earned All-American status at the NHSCA national competition, which started yesterday.

Colvard was set to wrestle Sam Bennett of Indiana this morning after earning All-American honors for advancing out of yesterday's first-day competition.

Among those competing yesterday for Cary were Cordale Risk and Ben Creed. Both lost in overtime just before reaching the All-America rounds. Jason Rossi, David Alecio and Jacob Brotzman also competed in the tournament.

Cary's Eloheim Palma is set to start his quest for a national championship today. Palma is the nation's No. 1-ranked wrestler.
