What to Watch on Tuesday: Democratic convention starts in Charlotte

Democratic National Convention - The Democrats get down to business in Charlotte. Just like the Republican party in Tampa, the wall-to-wall coverage will be online and on cable news channels. The broadcast networks start coverage at 10 p.m., and PBS (UNC-TV locally) has coverage starting at 7 p.m. Tonight's highlights include a speech by First Lady Michelle Obama. Here's the full rundown of what the networks and cable outlets have planned.

Hell's Kitchen (8pm, Fox) - The two finalists are chosen and must create one last dinner service menu, to be judged by a panel of world-renowned chefs.

Flipping Out (9pm, Bravo) - The DNC gets the headline but one of my very favorite reality shows gets the photo. In tonight's Season 6 premiere, tension rises between Gage and Jeff (at right, with dozing Monkey Stewie) over the revamping of their dream home, and the drama escalates when Jeff buys a new house without consulting with Gage. Elsewhere, Jenni throws an engagement party to introduce her new fiance. Also this season, Jeff will hire a new assistant (Andrew) to help pick up some of Jenni's slack, and he has some some pretty serious clashes with his longtime housekeeper (and mother figure), Zoila.

Coma (9pm, A&E) - The miniseries concludes tonight.

MasterChef (9pm, Fox) - The three remaining hopefuls must create a dish that best embodies their personality and passion for food.

Beverly Hills Nannies (9pm, ABC Family) - In the first season finale, Maggie's drinking gets her in trouble, and Justin and Amanda fear they're in over their heads at a baptism party.

Covert Affairs (10pm, USA) - Arthur is determined to bring in Simon after discovering Jai was investigating him before his death. Annie, hoping to protect Simon, offers to bring him in herself.

Chicago Trauma (10pm, National Geographic Channel) - A series following young doctors at Chicago's Cook County Hospital, home to one of the busiest trauma units in the United States.

What to Watch on Tuesday: A murder trial in 'Pretty Little Liars' summer finale

Republican National Convention - Primetime convention coverage on broadcast networks begins at 10 p.m. tonight. If you want wall-to-wall coverage, your best bet is to head online or to cable. Tonight's highlights include speeches from Ann Romney, Govs. Chris Christie (N.J.), Bobby Jindal (La.) and Bob McDonnell (Va.), former senator Rick Santorum. Here's much more information about RNC viewing.

Pretty Little Liars (8pm, ABC Family) - In the summer season finale, Maya's murder trial gets underway, and Emily can't withstand the media attention surrounding it. "A" then extends an olive branch to the girls, who are skeptical about the sincerity of this offer.

MasterChef (9pm, Fox) - Four hopefuls remain, and they're forced to work in teams of two to prepare a gourmet meal for three world-renowned chefs: Daniel Boulud, Alain Ducasse and Guy Savoy. The losing team must face off in a tense souffle test to earn a spot in the Top 3.

Mysteries at the Museum (9pm, Travel) - New England museums are spotlighted. Included, a look at a dress that is linked to a purported alien encounter.

Covert Affairs (10pm, USA) - Annie goes to Cuba with Simon in order to gain more information about his affairs, but she doesn't have any backup from the CIA during the trip.

Collection Intervention (10pm, Syfy) - A couple shares a one-bedroom apartment with a dog and ... thirty thousand comic books.

What to Watch on Tuesday: PBS claims to have Bob Dylan's electric guitar

Pretty Little Liars (8pm, ABC Family) - Hanna attempts to find out who's assiting Garret, and Emily has another flashback, which points her to a suspect.

History Detectives (9pm, UNC-TV) - The Season 10 premiere investigates the history of a Fender Stratocaster electric guitar to determine if it's the same one Bob Dylan played at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival (where he was booed off the stage for "going electric"). (Note: PBS is currently in dispute with Bob Dylan over this. A lawyer for Dylan says the singer still has the guitar, but PBS is so far standing by its claim that Dawn Peterson has the instrument). Also, possible Beatles autographs from 1964 Miami Beach, and a $5 thrift-store find that may have a Frank Zappa link.

MasterChef (9pm, Fox) - Paula Deen is the guest judge for a Southern-inspired mystery-box challenge.

American Gypsies (9pm, National Geographic Channel) - The series premiere introduces the Johns, a tight-knit Romani family  living in New York City. Patriarch Bob Sr.'s health is failing, prompting brothers Nicky and Bobby to battle for leadership. Meanwhile, a rival family encroaches on Nicky's psychic shop, leading to a violent confrontation.

NY Med (10pm, ABC) - A man with a liver disease needs a transplant and hopes to live long enough for his daughter's wedding, and a trauma surgeon finds his groove in New York after leaving New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel (10pm, HBO) - Segments include a look at marching-band hazing; an interview with MLB All-Star Matt Kemp; and a report on former Olympic gold medalist Dominque Moceanu.

Michael Wood's Story of England (8pm, UNC-TV) - Historian Michael Wood filters the 2,000-year history of England through the story of one small town located in the heart of the country: Kibworth, Leicestershire. From the Roman era to the Norman Conquest, the Black Death, the English Civil War, the Industrial Revolution and World War II, this four-part series intertwines the local and national narratives, marking the milestones that changed the town and country forever. Freud's Naked Truths (9pm, Smithsonian) - A new documentary about the life and work of the great 20th century painter Lucian Freud, the grandson of Sigmund Freud. Before Lucian died last year, he gave his full backing to this documentary, which includes the only known footage of him painting on what turned out to be the last day he ever worked.

Franklin & Bash (10pm, TNT)
- Peter and Jared advocate for a notable judge who's charged with having an affair with a lawyer.

Craft Wars (10pm, TLC) - Challengers must create patio furniture from beach toys. $10,000 prize for the winner.

Haunted Highway (10pm, Syfy) - The debut of a new series featuring paranormal investigations at locales along remote roads (producers need to call me!). Tonight, strange creatures are sought in Utah and Montana.

What to Watch on Monday: More stunts from Nik Wallenda

Bachelorette (8pm, ABC) - TV Guide says Charlotte's Emily Maynard returns to the U.S. and "spends some much-needed time with her daughter," but I recall seeing the kid along on some of those trips. Am I wrong? Anyway, tonight is hometown date night -- Emily meets the families of the four remaining suitors.

Nik Wallenda Beyond Niagra (8pm, Science) - Enjoy Nik Wallenda's tightrope walk across Niagara Falls? You might want to check this out. In this first episode, Wallenda goes to Puerto Rico, where his great-grandfather died during a wire walk. Teen Wolf (10pm, MTV) - Scott and Stiles race to protect their friends after receiving startling new information about the shape shifter. Meanwhile, Allison is given an investigative task by her family.

Hell's Kitchen (8pm, Fox) - Eighteen contestants sign on for Season 10. In tonight's part one of the two-party premiere, the cooks are split into two teams and prepare signature dishes they hope Gordon Ramsay doesn't spit into the garbage.

Teen Wolf (9pm, MTV) - Technically, the second season premiere aired last night at 11 after the MTV Movie awards, but that episode repeats tonight at 9 and then the show moves into its regular 10 p.m. time slot. In the first episode, Lydia goes missing from the hospital and both werewolves and hunters try to find her. In the second episode, there's trouble for Isaac's father on the night before the full moon. I'm so happy this is back!

MasterChef (9pm, Fox) - I usually love this series because it gives true amateur cooks a shot at the big time, but the Season 3 premiere episode left me a bit cold. The shtick of judges Gordon Ramsay, Joe Bastianich and Graham Eliot has become predictable, and many of the contestants are just too ridiculous to take seriously. Do we really need the bizarro "American Idol"-style audition moments?? But beneath the silliness, there are still some great stories here and a few cooks I'm already cheering hard for. A blind chef. A blind chef!

American Pickers (9pm, History) - A trip to North Carolina includes brass-era car parts, folk art, and a collection of Indian motorbikes and accessories.

What to Watch on Monday: An intense 'Teen Wolf' finale

MasterChef (9pm, Fox) - We're down to the final four contestants, and sadly, Ben Starr is not one of them. But I'll keep watching -- and keep sticking pins in my 'do-ragged Christian voodoo doll.

The Closer (9pm, TNT) - Brenda investigates a body found at a home construction site, and also finally considers turning to a lawyer. But the lawyer's pricey retainer fee means Fritz may have to sacrifice certain luxuries.

Teen Wolf (10pm, MTV) - This is going to be GOOD. In tonight's season finale, Scott (Tyler Posey, right) is caught in the middle of a war between werewolves and hunters, and he enlists the help of both his friends and enemies to stop the mysterious killings and win back Allison.

Rizzoli & Isles (10pm, TNT) - A killing at the site of a Revolutionary War reenactment puts Maura on the front lines of the investigation, as she must tap into her considerable knowledge of American history to crack the case. According to Zap2It.com, the special takes viewers inside facilities in New York and Texas where clients hunt and kill exotic and sometimes endangered species. Zebras, wildebeests, even kangaroos are all fair game and confined to a limited area where they are easy pickings for the trophy-hungry hunter. Seriously, in what kind of tortured rationalization is that "sporting?"

Sex Crimes Unit (9pm, HBO) - A documentary that looks at the division of the Manhattan DA's office dedicated to investigating and prosecuting sexual assault cases. Includes the story of a 1993 rape that was reexamined shortly before the statute of limitations expired, but ended with a conviction. Directed by Lisa F. Jackson.

MasterChef (9pm, Fox) - The contestants have one hour to prepare a dish using surprise ingredients found in a mystery box. Two are eliminated. My vow to Fox: I'll keep watching as long as you keep Pumpkin Ben. After that, I can't make any promises.
