What to Watch on Wednesday: Cat fights and McCreery on 'American Idol'

Big Rich Atlanta (8pm, Style) - Another reality show set in Atlanta. Adrienne has the details.

American Idol (8pm, Fox) - Footage from the Charlotte (well, Concord) auditions is on tap tonight, and so is a bit of the nasty fighting between Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey that we've been hearing about for months now. The North Carolina audition, which took place at the Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord, is where the two judges had their infamous, profanity-laced spat. Also, even more importantly, Garner's own Scotty McCreery, the 2011 "American Idol" winner, stops by the auditions to wish the young singers luck. If you're going to watch one "Idol" this season, this is the one.

Nature: Attenborough's Life Stories - Life on Camera (8pm, UNC-TV) - In part one of a three-part "Nature" special, wildlife filmmaker David Attenborough revisits key places and events from his 60-year career. He also reflects on how technological breakthroughs have increased the understanding of the natural world, including advancements in underwater photography, the invention of infrared films, remote control cameras, time-lapse photography and digital slow-motion cameras.

Kimora: House of Fab (9pm, Style) - In this new series, Kimora Lee Simmons becomes president and creative director of the online fashion company JustFab. Adrienne reviews.

Suburgatory (9:30pm, ABC) - George needs some space when Dallas is overenthusiastic about his business, so he persuades Noah and Fred to start a band just for guys, but George breaks his own rule after he hears Sheila sing.

American Horror Story (10pm, FX) - In the season finale, Johnny (Bloody Face Jr.) aims to complete his father's work by murdering his mother. Meanwhile, Lana attempts to shut down Briarcliff.

Necessary Roughness (10pm, USA) - The second half of the season starts with Dani seeing a therapist (Peter MacNicol) in order to get her own career back on track. Also, TK returns to the Hawks but finds that another player has taken his position.

A unique Durham presence on "American Idol"

"American Idol" doesn't air its North Carolina auditions episode until next week. But an unusual performer from Durham was featured on Thursday night's show, which was devoted to auditions from Chicago last year.

Kez Ban, a 27-year-old street musician who says she also sometimes performs with fire, doesn't look anything like your typical "Idol" auditioner. With her jaunty hat and a boot wrapped with crime scene tape, Kez Ban, right, seems like the kind of quirky cannon fodder we often see on the auditions. Somebody who sings terribly and gets giggles and pained faces from the judges.

But when the Durham resident sings, we're all in for a surprise. Kez Ban is actually pretty good! She sings "I've Got No Strings" (yes, from "Pinocchio") first. Then she asks if she can play her guitar and perform one of her original compositions. The song, "Wandering," is nice. And it certainly stands out amid some of the overwrought ballads or screechy rock anthems that other hopefuls audition with.

Kevin Hart brings his full funny self to "Real Husbands of Hollywood"

Since their inception, the 'Housewives' reality shows have been rife for parody. All that fussing and fighting, pretending to be rich and classy, and the fact that most of them aren't even housewives --- they're comedy gold.

At this point, though, the shows are pretty much a parody of themselves. (There are divorced housewives, ex-wives, mob wives, starter wives, pastors' wives...) That would seem to make for rough going for "The Real Husbands of Hollywood," (10 tonight, BET), a fake reality show starring hot comic Kevin Hart. But this is Kevin Hart, and if you've ever seen him you know he's funny and he's got energy to spare. Like he did with the movie "Think Like A Man," Hart straps this show to his back and carries it over the goal line.

The show features Hart (who isn't a husband, by the way) along with comic JB Smoove, host/producer/comic Nick Cannon, actors Boris Kodjoe and Duane Martin and singer Robin Thicke. Rapper Nelly's around too. They all play versions of themselves; the show makes fun of Cannon's multiple jobs and the fact that he's married to the older and more well-known Mariah Carey; Kodjoe is mocked as a pretty boy, Martin is always hustling some crazy idea for the others to invest in.

Those characterizations can still be funny even if you don't know that they have a ring of truth, but that doesn't matter anyway because, again, it's Hart's show. In the first episode, Hart gets into a fight with an 11-year-old, gets into a fight with his attorney, gets into a fight with Robin Thicke. Even thing he says isn't hilarious, but his manic, cross-eyed way of saying things is.

It's clear "Real Husbands of Hollywood" will be a lot of fun and good for BET for striking the Hart iron while it's hot. Lord knows they've been bested, series-wise, by TV One at every turn. This time, it seems BET has scored.

Scotty celebrates Christmas on TV this week

Sad that you didn't get to celebrate the holidays with your favorite “American Idol” winner at Tuesday night’s Scotty McCreery concert at the DPAC?

Well, you’ll get a couple other chances to see him share the Christmas spirit on TV this week.

On Wednesday night, McCreery, the Garner native and N.C. State University freshman, will appear on NBC’s “Christmas in Rockefeller Center” holiday special at 8. The show, featuring the lighting of the giant Christmas tree in New York City, also will include Mariah Carey, now an “Idol” judge, and Cee Lo Green of rival singing competition “The Voice.”

Then on Saturday, McCreery headlines his own special, “Christmas with Scotty McCreery and Friends” on the Great American Country cable network. The show, taped in Nashville, includes fellow country acts Gloriana, Jana Kramer and Brett Eldridge.

Nicki Minaj fights with Mariah Carey at 'American Idol' Charlotte audition

And we all thought those two really stable, balanced singing personalities were going to get along so well... [Illusions shattered.] This video, posted on TMZ, captured a mostly one-sided screaming match (Minaj at Carey) at an "American Idol" audition yesterday in Charlotte. I can't understand a quarter of what Nicki is saying here (EW has some transcription), but she's clearly upset. I'm guessing Keith Urban, sitting between the two divas, is wondering what the heck he's gotten himself into.

It's official: 'American Idol' judge panel includes Keith Urban, Nicki Minaj

A Fox press release issued this morning confirmed the new judges for the upcoming season of "American Idol."

Keith Urban, Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey will join Randy Jackson at the judges' table.

Executive producer Simon Fuller, from the release: “With the exciting addition of Mariah Carey, Keith Urban and Nicki Minaj, alongside Randy Jackson, AMERICAN IDOL’s star power has never been so great."

"American Idol" returns in January 2013.

Strong season of "Unsung" starts with 'Silly' singer Deneice Williams

TV One begins a new season of "Unsung" (10 tonight), its series exploring the life and times and unheralded performers, and this season is one to get excited about.

It starts strong with a look at Deneice Williams, the multi-octave singer of such hits as "Silly" and "Let's Hear It for the Boy," convincingly making the case that Williams never got her due for her soaring pipes. After all, before Mariah Carey trilled her pop, R&B and gospel tunes, Niecy did it. (I'd put Minnie Riperton, a former "Unsung" subject, firmly in R&B, albeit alternative at times.)

What to Watch on Monday: Fa-la-la-la-la with 'Sing Off' and a Mariah Carey's Christmas

Moguls & Movie Stars: A History of Hollywood (8pm, TCM) - The series finale examines the change in the cinema-scape from 1960 to 1969 as old studio heads died and maverick new filmmakers addressed controversial topics such as drugs and changing political attitudes.

The Sing-Off (8pm, NBC) - The groups perform rock songs and guilty pleasures, and collaborate to sing Green Day's "21 Guns."

Mariah Carey: Merry Christmas to You (9pm, ABC) - Mariah Carey performs songs from her second holiday album, "Merry Christmas II You," including "Oh Santa!" Taped at the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles.

Marry Me (9pm, Lifetime) - The conclusion of the two-part Lifetime movie starring Lucy Liu.

The Closer (9pm, TNT) - Did you read that 'The Closer' is ending after next season? Savor the eps while you can! Tonight, new Chief of Police Tommy Delk (Courtney B. Vance) enlists the team to investigate thefts at various medical-marijuana dispensaries. The seemingly inconguous assignment takes a perilous turn when one robbery results in murder. The cases tests Brenda's readiness to rise to a higher departmental post.

Men of a Certain Age (10pm, TNT) - Joe tries to open his schedule to practice golf, and Owen's new job as manager puts stress on his marriage, while coworkers pull a prank on Terry after they dig up video of one of his old commercials.

Simon Cowell releases Haiti relief video and single

Simon Cowell hopes to raise relief money for the earthquake-ravaged people of Haiti with the release of a new single, "Everybody Hurts."

The new recording (originally by the group REM) features 21 artists, including Rod Stewart, Jon Bon Jovi, and Mariah Carey.

The single can be downloaded on iTunes and all proceeds go to Disasters Emergency Committee and The Sun's Helping Haiti Fund.

The video is pretty moving, with shots of the artists singing in the studio interspersed with images of suffering in Haiti. You can watch it below:
