"Rachel Maddow" producer questions whether Wake school election results "really matter"

Jamil Smith, producer of the liberal "The Rachel Maddow Show" on MSNBC, questions whether the Wake County school board election results "really matter" because the old diversity policy isn't being reinstituted.

In a post today on The Maddow Blog, Smith writes that the GOP board majority "has been pushing a nouveau-segregationist 'neighborhood schools' plan. He writes that "on its face," Kevin Hill's victory "would seem to spell the end for the idea of resegregating the county's schools."

But Smith then points to how Hill and other members of the new Democratic majority "aren't saying that they'll reverse what the Republicans did" when they dropped the socioeconomic diversity policy. He points Kevin Hill saying they'll only make a few tweaks to the new student assignment plan.

Rachel Maddow on the "really important consequences" of the Wake County school board election results

Rachel Maddow cheered the return of a Democratic majority to the Wake County school board election as "a small-sounding election tonight with really, really important consequences."

Tuesday on MSNBC's "The Rachel Maddow Show," the liberal commentator said that "Wake County schools' elections have had national implications and been of national interest ever since Republicans last year on that board moved to abolish one of the nation's most celebrated racial integration policies."

"The anti-integration Republican majority elected two years ago was supported by Americans for Prosperity, which as you know is the conservative activist group funded by the Koch brothers," Maddow said. "But as of tonight's election results in Wake County, North Carolina, that work has been overturned by the voters of Wake County. A small-sounding election tonight with really, really important consequences."

Liberal groups have argued that the 2009 election of a new Republican school board majority was the work of conservatives such as the Koch brothers. Supporters of the now-outgoing board majority have denied the charge.

MSNBC trying to link Koch brothers to school board elections through AFP support to Wake CARES

Do 2007 donations from the state chapter of Americans for Prosperity to Wake CARES during the mandatory year-round lawsuit constitute grounds for linking the conservative Koch brothers to the 2009 Wake County school board elections?

That's how the left-wing cable news network MSNBC is trying to tie the Koch brothers to the new school board majority that ended the diversity policy. It was part of a segment on Wake County schools titled "Repealing the 20th Century" that aired Thursday night on MSNBC's "The Last Word" show.

"Now there are multiple reports directly or indirectly linking the Koch brothers — those mysterious right-wing billionaires behind the Astroturf-group Americans for Prosperity — to the Republican school board members who are actively pushing to resegregate Wake County schools," said Melissa Harris-Perry, the show's guest host. "To be fair, it's not entirely clear just how much money the Koch-backed Americans for Prosperity put behind the candidates in 2009."

Olbermann to debut on Current TV in June

Current TV has just unveiled the name and debut date of former MSNBC mad man/commentator Keith Olbermann's new show on the channel.

Hmm. Maybe 'unveiled' is too strong a word. The show's name? "Countdown with Keith Olbermann."  Yes, that is the same name as the MSNBC show he left. Guess he owns the title.

Beginning June 20, the show will air each week night at 8, and will "combine familiar and popular features with some new elements that we can’t wait to unveil,” said Mark Rosenthal, CEO of Current.  “We’re creating a great platform for Keith’s style, which includes a very sophisticated digital presence for him -- that we think will appeal to his very enthusiastic and active following.  The show will also appeal to new viewers tuning into Keith for the first time.“

Which we'll translate to mean the same show with a few new cool graphics.

MSNBC's ousted Olbermann moving to Current TV

Keith Olbermann, who hosted the highest-rated show on MSNBC, announced this morning that he will soon host a primetime television show and take on an executive role at the struggling cable channel Current TV. He will also have an equity stake in the company.

Olbermann was dismissed from MSNBC last month.

Current TV was co-founded by former Vice President Al Gore. They produce original news documentaries on a wide variety of public interest topics. Laura Ling and Euna Lee, the two reporters imprisoned in North Korea in 2009 and later released to former President Bill Clinton, were on assignment for Current TV when they were arrested.

Current TV shows can be watched online at their website, and are also available through most cable carriers. It airs locally on channel 413 on Time Warner Cable and 358 on DirecTV.

Keith Olbermann is out at MSNBC

Keith Olbermann is out at MSNBC. He made the announcement during his final "Countdown with Keith Olbermann," which aired tonight. Olbermann is the highest rated host at MSNBC but has had a contentious relationship with the network since his suspension over political campaign contributions last November.

MSNBC released this statement: “MSNBC and Keith Olbermann have ended their contract. The last broadcast of ‘Countdown with Keith Olbermann’ will be this evening. MSNBC thanks Keith for his integral role in MSNBC’s success and we wish him well in his future endeavors.”

Olbermann will be replaced by Lawrence O'Donnell.

TV programming alert: Tucson memorial service

The big three networks -- ABC, CBS, and NBC -- will interrupt regular programming tonight to broadcast the remarks of President Obama at this evening's memorial service in Tucson.

The remarks are expected to come sometime between 8pm - 9pm and will likely last less than 10 minutes.

CBS will air repeats of "Big Bang Theory" and "Rules of Engagement" from 8 to 9 and interrupt one of those. "Live to Dance" is moved to 9pm and a new episode of "The Defenders" will air at 10pm.

Jay Leno to host White House Correspondents Dinner

I'm getting sleepy just thinking about this.

Jay Leno is headlining this year's White House Correspondents Dinner, where he will efficiently bore (and most importantly, not offend) the 2,600 politicians and celebrities gathered for the annual Nerd Prom.

What's most obvious about this hosting choice is that the White House is playing it S-A-F-E this year. Unlike past hosts Wanda Sykes and Stephen Colbert, Leno is unlikely to cause so much as a ripple with his predictable style of comedy (check out Colbert's infamous 2006 hosting job here). Maybe he'll do a special edition of "Headlines" or "Jay Walking." Yay.

Festivities will air on MSNBC this Saturday night at 9pm.

The dinner raises scholarship money for budding journalists.

What to Watch on Saturday: Adam's Rib and the high price of love

Adam's Rib (10pm, TCM) - The 1949 classic about a husband-and-wife team of lawyers (Spencer Tracy & Katharine Hepburn) who take opposite sides in the case of a woman (Judy Holliday) who tried to kill her husband.

Lockup: Colorado Extended Stay (10pm, MSNBC) -  A new episode of this popular MSNBC series looks at "love in prison and its consequences." That could be interpreted a couple of different ways...

Austin City Limits (Midnight, UNC-TV) - Canadian indie-rock band Arcade Fire plays from their second cd, "Neon Bible." It's a repeat, but it's still Arcade Fire.
