Locals are in for Duke

Duke had almost unprecedented success with highly regarded players in the Triangle area in its 2009 recruiting class.

The Blue Devils have received letters of intent confirming that Triangle influence, according to scout.com. Durham Hillside running back Desmond Scott, the gem of the class whom coach David Cutcliffe pried away from Rutgers, has turned in his letter.

They brought pressure

In Leesville Road's 26-0 defeat of Apex, the Pride's defense stood out.

Five interceptions. Two of them for lengthy returns of 45 and 65 yards (Bradley Moody and Cameron Todd respectively).

N&O preseason football rankings

The N&O top dozen is announced on Tuesday in the High School Huddle ... but here's a sneak peak.

Leesville soccer is loaded

Leesville finished 16-6-1 in boys soccer last year. Three losses were to state champion Broughton, two were to state semifinalist Green Hope and one was to Apex.

"It's tough to be the third or fourth best team in the area and at the same time be the third or fourth best team in the state," said Leesville coach Chip Stone.

The Pride returns 13 lettermen including Appalachian State recruit Ethan Durland, back Elliott Grlj, midfielder Chris Kelleher and keeper Eric Howard. Bo Burns also made all-Cap Seven in 2007.

"Expect great games with area schools," Stone said. "Who gets hot at the right time usually tells the tale for state champion."

Things to look for in tonight's scrimmage at Wake Forest-Rolesville

Broughton boys soccer starts on top

Broughton, the 2007 N.C. High School Athletic Association 4-A boys soccer champion, opens the 2008 season ranked No. 1 in the N.C. Soccer Coaches Association 4-A poll.

“That’s based on last year,” said Caps coach Izzy Hernandez. “Last year’s champion usually is ranked No. 1 in the preseason.

“We have a nice squad. The cupboard isn’t bare."

The Caps are followed by Green Hope (No. 4), Apex (6), Sanderson (8) and Leesville Road (12).
In the 3-A poll, Wilson Fike is No. 2 and Pikeville Aycock is 10.

Cardinal Gibbons is No. 2 in 2-A and Durham Science & Math leads the 1-A ranking.

North Raleigh Christian is No. 2 in the private schools list with St. David’s taking No. 5. Wake Christian, the 2007 Christian school 3-A champ, is No. 9.
