A meeting for Leesville

It's not officially a community engagement meeting, but I doubt the distinction will matter to Leesville parents.

As Lisa Boneham already mentioned on the blog today, a meeting will be held on Nov. 17 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Leesville Road High School's auditorium. Staff will discuss the draft reassignment plan and how it impacts the calendar conversion at Leesville Road Middle School.

Mixed messages from Leesville

A lack of unanimity may have doomed efforts by some parents to get the school board to reverse the conversion of Leesville Road Middle School to a year-round calendar.

As noted in today's article, school board members heard Monday both from Leesville parents who oppose conversion and those who are in support. Board members who supported conversion seized on that division.

"You hear two different things from two different groups," said board member Horace Tart.

New votes on Daniels and Leesville

Parents at Daniels and Leesville Road middle schools will get a second crack today at persuading the school board to reverse recent votes.

Today's board agenda includes a vote on converting Leesville to a year-round calendar and another on removing the magnet program at Daniels. Parents will be able to have their say during the public comment portion at 4 p.m.

As noted previously, a revote was likely.

UPDATE

Ron Margiotta unsuccessfully asked his fellow board members to pull the items for Leesville and Daniels off the agenda. Both of his motions to remove the items died from a lack of a second. He had argued they should be pulled to allow more time for public comment before a final decision is made.

Revoting on Daniels and Leesville?

It's looking more likely that the school board will revote on the recent decisions affecting Daniels and Leesville Road middle schools.

As noted in today's article, Rosa Gill, chairwoman of the school board, said she's reviewing the recent votes and could ask on Nov. 3 for new votes. In the case of Daniels. there's a decent chance that the board could now decide to keep the school's magnet program.

Gill said she wants to see how the recent votes compare with prior ones. The board had voted in regular meetings and not work sessions to make final decisions before on demagnetization and calendar conversion.

Leesville split over year-round

Leesville families fighting the year-round conversion efforts are ramping things up.

Concerned and Committed Leesville Parents (CCLP) has issued a press release and formed a Web site to promote the message that Leesville Road elementary and middle schools should be on a traditional calendar. They've got yard signs and car magnets.

But as noted in today's North Raleigh News article, it's not a one-sided fight. Leesville parents who support year-round conversion are becoming more vocal to counter opponents.

Converting and unconverting schools

The school board has agreed to switch Baucom and Green Hope elementary schools back to a traditional calendar.

Baucom will switch back from a year-round calendar for the 2009-10 school year. Green Hope won't make the move until Alston Ridge Elementary opens. It's schedule to open for the 2010-11 school year.

But in a surprise to some board members, they're also now considering today whether to convert Leesville Road Middle School to a year-round calendar.

UPDATE

Click here for the online story. The board voted 7-1 to convert Leesville with Margiotta the lone dissenter.

Leesville's uphill fight for unconversion

It's safe to say that Leesville Road Elementary parents will have a tougher time than their peers at Baucom Elementary or any of the Knightdale schools of being unconverted.

As noted in today's North Raleigh News article, not even Leesville's own school board member, Patti Head, is supporting switching the school back to a traditional calendar.

“I supported the conversion,” Head said in today's article. “To date, I haven’t been presented any information that would cause me to change my mind. But that doesn’t mean I’m not listening to people.”
